Phone with infrared camera cat. CAT S60 review: the world's first smartphone with a thermal imager

Rating: 5 out of 5

Technologist Vanu

Advantages: 1. Thermal imager. 2. Housing assembly. 3. The movement of mechanical keys and macros that can be assigned to them. 4. Hypothetical security. 5. Appearance (personal opinion). 6. Battery (a day of non-stop use: LTE without turning off, games, social networks... by the end of the day 30% left) 7. Screen brightness. (the reserve is huge, a third of the power is enough for my eyes, but I know that I can use the phone even on the brightest sunny day) 8. It doesn’t get dirty. At all. At all. Nowhere except the screen and camera eyes can you leave fingerprints. The case materials themselves are very, very nice. 9. There are no complaints about the work. 10. The camera is satisfactory, as is the filling.

Disadvantages: 1. I’ll be simple: wireless charging would add a lot of points to this device. 2. The metal frame is easy to scratch. 3. Lack of support in Russia. 4. The need to invest a little of your work (more details in the comments) 5. The first batches were not equipped with rubber mats in the SIM card department, I just came across one - I made it to order. But it doesn’t reboot and doesn’t become willful, as people complained about here.

Comment: I knew about the model for a long time, I purchased it spontaneously) The device is captivating because it offers the user something truly out of the ordinary. The overwhelming number of smartphones in different price segments do the same thing. Expensive ones do better, cheap ones do worse. At best, in a year... your smartphone turns from expensive to cheap - the relativity of existence, however. And here there really is a feature that has not appeared before, and is unlikely to appear anywhere else in principle. What a useful feature. Yes, compared to serious thermal imagers, this one is a toy. But it is integrated into a quality, multi-purpose device. Attention: for those whose proximity sensor does not dim the screen well during a conversation and this is critical, remove the protective film, everything will be as it should. In mine, I carefully cut out the space around the sensor with a utility knife (of course, BEFORE the sticker!). Bottom line: I didn’t think that I would buy a smartphone more expensive than 20 thousand rubles. Simply because they do, I repeat, the same thing. This one is an exception. Not without its flaws, of course, but you can’t raise your hand to bet less than five. If it breaks, it will be a three, but for now it will be five. I hope that the device will last a long time. If I change it, it will only be if something with a warmer appears again: you quickly get used to convenient things. It helps in cooking and in finding a cat (I feel like this will be more relevant than ever at the dacha), and it’s also interesting to do experiments. The use of a thermal camera is limited only by your imagination: for example, recently someone forgot their keys, and from the faint heat signature on the computer chair, I realized that the unfortunate man could not have gone far. I called, informed, the person returned... Remark: if you are not interested in a thermal imager, there is no point in buying the S60.

Advantages: High-quality original design, there is nothing superfluous. An absolutely complete concept in implementation. An eight-core processor (not really fast) leaves hopes for the evolution of the interface on performance and separation of technical process flows.

Disadvantages: - camera: glass becomes cloudy. Take care and cherish this hole (it is plastic with a rustling coating on the outside). How to change? Where can I get spare parts? How to disassemble a phone? Focusing (also photography with flash) was initially very poorly done, updates more or less leveled out a little, a little. But the clouding of the viewfinder brought everything to naught. (Samsung Note III still takes perfect photos, perfect interface). - the interface is made very poorly: the provider and media player had to be installed from a third party. - you need some kind of bumper with a hook for a rope so as not to drown it from the boat. And protective glass (the protective film quickly wore out and clung to everything and caused it to fall to the floor).

A comment:

Rating: 5 out of 5

Advantages: On the Market it is proposed to evaluate each characteristic separately - the screen there, the memory. If you look at it this way, the tube is very average, BUT... The thermal imager really makes a difference! It is, of course, entry-level, but it is well suited for solving everyday problems, and it is in the phone case and not in a damn suitcase! After purchasing this device, more than a dozen household uses for the thermal imager were found; you can even bend the developer if the windows are blowing; you can see on video where the cold bridges are, where the frames don’t fit in size. Plus the buttons on the front side are mechanical, I don’t know who likes them as much as I like them.

Disadvantages: It is heavy, it eats up the battery, the charging connector is on the side, and is covered with a flimsy lid. The sensor does not work well in a hot pool. Everything is fine in a cold pool))))

Comment: But seriously, the only thing cooler is a phone with a built-in lighter, I hope they will invent one like that someday. To everyone who has come up with at least two uses for a thermal imager - take this phone, you won’t regret it.

Advantages: Indestructible and unsinkable with good hardware, dual-SIM capability, normal battery, current version of Android. A thermal imager, of course, and what a thermal imager! Combining a thermal image with a camera, overlaying images, processing capabilities - this is really cool!!! Design, loud sound, programmable button... This Smart has a lot of great features! For me, the design is very nice, which cannot be said about many monstrous rubberized rugged phones.

Disadvantages: Wi-Fi is weaker than on conventional gadgets. Where others have a full antenna, this one has half. But in principle, it’s not particularly critical. There is enough in the apartment. There is no way to get root rights. This is sadness. I'm used to rooting all gadgets to fine-tune them for myself. No wireless charging. You have to pick out the plug every time.

Comment: Smart is awesome. After fragile phones (the last ones were doubly fragile iotaphones), they are not scary to hold in your hands. I fell from a height of half a meter - not a scratch. I rinsed it under the tap - very convenient. It works quickly and the battery lasts well. I use it for two people: for my personal and for my work smartphones. The battery easily lasts a whole day. I always charge at night, even if more than half is left. Holds the net well, with the exception of the waffle (not the strongest technique). There is nothing to write about the thermal imager, except that this is not available in any other smartphone. I am very pleased with the purchase.

Advantages: Housing, thermal chamber.

Disadvantages: Battery. Heats up during navigation or active use. Camera. Charging connector. GPS signal.

Comment: In order: Housing. Security, solidity. I like. Thermal chamber is an interesting application in my work. I'm waiting for the cold weather, let's check the heat loss of homes. I hope the owners will put down beer). Battery, I expected more. Without navigation, 1.5 days is enough. With navigation and internet it was difficult for 1 day. I optimize little by little. The first Android after Windows, it eats noticeably more. Heat. Especially when navigating and charging at the same time. Even the film peels off on top. Camera....don't expect masterpieces, the photo is purely for information. The connector doesn't seem to last a year. Often you have to pull it. In the car, lying under the visor of the instrument panel, I lost the signal. Moreover, it depended on whether the charging hole was down or up. Charging up is better. And it’s more noticeable on third-party programs. This is Waze and Yandex navigator. It's not so noticeable in native language. Maybe it depended on the area, I continue to observe. In general, the impressions are greater from Android compared to Windows. Yes, there are advantages in the form of useful programs. But most extras The programs eat up the battery and after a week half of them are deactivated. Meaning? The most useful PAY and analysis of card expenses. Well, it also determines the region of the call (necessary for work). Optimization of Wi-fi and NFC performance is better in Windows. Communication with the car too. The proximity sensor froze 1-2 times.

Smartphone/Communicator

2G standards:

The mobile communication standard defines the technologies used and the principle of constructing mobile communication networks. Mobile communication networks are usually divided into analog (NMT, AMPS) and digital (D-AMPS, GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, UMTS), and also classified by generation (generation) stages of development of the standards themselves.
GSM(Global System for Mobile Communications) is the most popular and widespread second-generation 2G cellular communication standard almost all over the world. In our country, as in most European countries, frequencies of 900 and 1800 MHz are allocated for this standard. In the countries of the American continent, it is customary to use frequencies of 850 and 1900 MHz.
The widespread introduction of GSM to replace outdated analogue networks has made it possible to significantly expand the subscriber base and the range of services provided, making cellular communications widely available. However, the specifics of GSM limit the services currently in demand based on high-speed Internet access.

GSM 900 / GSM 850 / GSM 1900 / GSM 1800

3G standards:

3G(Third Generation) - Third generation mobile communication technologies based on packet data transmission. Third generation 3G networks usually operate in the range of about 2 GHz, allowing data transfer at a speed comparable to a dedicated home Internet. In addition to standard voice telephony services, 3G networks are initially focused on various multimedia services, such as video telephony and video conferencing, online viewing of broadcast television and films, listening to Internet radio, etc. The most common third generation communication standard is WCDMA (UMTS) , operating in most European countries, incl. in Russia and CIS countries.

UMTS 2100 / UMTS 900 / UMTS 850

4G standards (LTE):

4G (Fourth generation)- The fourth generation of mobile communications, characterized by high data transfer speeds and improved quality of voice communications. Fourth generation networks include mobile data technology LTE(Long Term Evolution). Data transfer speeds using the LTE standard theoretically reach 173 Mbit/s for reception (download), and 58 Mbit/s for upload (upload).

LTE 900 / LTE 1800 / LTE 2100 / LTE 2600 / LTE 800

VoLTE:

VoLTE (in English Voice over LTE - voice over LTE)- voice transmission technology over the LTE network, which allows you to provide voice services and deliver them as a data stream over LTE. MegaFon is the first telecom operator in Russia to launch VoLTE without restrictions on the type of user: all subscribers in the Capital Region only, regardless of the tariff plan and billing system used, can connect to the HD Voice in 4G service and make calls using the new technology with using mobile devices supporting VoLTE network "MegaFon".

SIM card generation:

Each new generation of SIM cards is smaller than the previous one. Format Mini-SIM(2FF) appeared in the 1990s and is now used primarily in simple push-button phones. Cards Micro-SIM(3FF) have been used in smartphones since 2003 to this day. Nano-SIM(4FF) is the most compact card installed in modern smart devices. eSIM is a chip built into the device onto which a virtual SIM card can be written. This format is not supported by all telecom operators.

Number of SIM cards:

Accumulator battery:

The difference in the chemical composition of batteries determines their physical and consumer parameters.
Ni-Cd(Nickel - Cadmium) and Ni-Mh(Nickel - Metal Hydride) batteries are quite heavy and bulky. Being not completely discharged before recharging, they are prone to loss of capacity (memory effect), and therefore require periodic maintenance (charge-discharge, so-called training).
Against, Li-Ion(Lithium Ion) and Li-Pol(Lithium - Polymer) batteries do not have these disadvantages. However, they lose their charge faster at low temperatures and have poor resistance to drops. Ease of maintenance and comparatively smaller size and weight were decisive factors for their active use.

Li-Ion, 3800 mAh

Wireless charging function:

A phone with wireless charging function can be charged without connecting a cable; you just need to place it on a special induction panel. A wireless charger is usually not included with your phone and must be purchased separately.
When choosing a charger, pay attention to the wireless charging standard (the most common is Qi).

NFC module:

NFC(Near Field Communication, “near field communication”) is a wireless communication technology that makes it possible to exchange data between devices located at a distance of up to 20 centimeters. There are many possible uses for NFC technology: transferring files between devices, connecting to accessories, using the device as a payment card, etc.

Equipment:

Smartphone, network charger, warranty card, instructions, packaging

Memory and processor

Amount of random access memory (RAM):

RAM, which is used for the operation of programs and applications in the device. The speed of the device depends on its size. The actual free memory capacity may differ from that specified by the manufacturer.

Built-in memory capacity:

Built-in device memory- the total amount of memory intended for both storing user data and applications installed by the manufacturer, and also includes a section with the Operating System. The actual free memory capacity may differ from that specified by the manufacturer.

Display and keyboard

Display type:

TFT IPS- High quality liquid crystal matrix. It has wide viewing angles, one of the best indicators of color rendering quality and contrast among all those used in the production of displays for portable equipment.
Super AMOLED- if a regular AMOLED screen uses several layers, between which there is an air gap, then in Super AMOLED there is only one such touch layer without air gaps. This allows you to achieve greater screen brightness with the same power consumption.
Super AMOLED HD- differs from Super AMOLED in its higher resolution, thanks to which you can achieve 1280x720 pixels on a mobile phone screen.
Super AMOLED plus- this is a new generation of Super AMOLED displays, differs from the previous one by using a larger number of subpixels in a conventional RGB matrix. The new displays are 18% thinner and brighter than displays made using the old PenTile technology.
AMOLED- an improved version of OLED technology. The main advantages of the technology are significantly reduced power consumption, the ability to display a larger color gamut, reduced thickness and the ability of the display to bend slightly without the risk of breaking.
Retina-high pixel density display designed specifically for Apple technology. The pixel density of Retina displays is such that individual pixels are indistinguishable to the eye at a normal distance from the screen. This ensures the highest image detail and significantly improves the overall viewing experience.
Super Retina HD- the display is made using OLED technology. The pixel density is 458 PPI, the contrast reaches 1,000,000:1. The display has a wide color gamut and unsurpassed color accuracy. Pixels in the corners of the display are smoothed at the sub-pixel level, so edges are not distorted and appear smooth. The Super Retina HD reinforcing layer is 50% thicker. It will be harder to break the screen.
Super LCD is the next generation of LCD technology, it is characterized by improved characteristics compared to earlier LCD displays. The screens not only have wide viewing angles and better color reproduction, but also lower power consumption.
TFT- A common type of liquid crystal display. Using an active matrix controlled by thin-film transistors, it is possible to significantly increase the performance of the display, as well as the contrast and clarity of the image.
OLED- organic electroluminescent display. It consists of a special thin-film polymer that emits light when exposed to an electric field. This type of display has a large reserve of brightness and consumes very little energy.

Touchscreen:

The touch display is a conventional graphic display, on top of which either a pressure-sensitive substrate or infrared sensors are placed. Such a display reacts appropriately to presses with a stylus (pen) or fingers and is a more convenient way to interface with the device than a keyboard.

Additional display:

As a rule, an additional display is installed in folding phones. Depending on the model of the device, the additional display may display the caller's number, time, signal reception level and battery charge level.

Multimedia

FM radio:

Your favorite radio stations or news programs will accompany you on a long journey and on the way to work. In some cases FM radio tuner can also be used as an alarm clock.
However, it should be remembered that due to design features, for the radio to work on almost all phone models, it is necessary to connect a wired portable headset.

Photo/Video camera

Main camera:

Thanks to the built-in digital camera It's very easy to capture important moments in life or shoot a video. Modern smartphone cameras are often not inferior in quality to real cameras. Using two, three or even four modules allows you to take wide-format photographs, photograph distant objects and achieve the effect of artistic background blur - bokeh.

Autofocus:

Flash:

Designed for short-term and intense illumination of objects during shooting. Cell phones can be xenon (which is based on an electric gas-discharge lamp filled with xenon) or LED (LEDs act as a light source).

LED

Main camera picture size:

Front camera picture size:

Maximum resolution of images obtained when photographing using the built-in camera. It is measured in the number of pixels horizontally and vertically. The higher the number of pixels, the clearer your photos will be.

Communications and interfaces

WiFi:

WiFi(IEEE 802.11) is a high-speed wireless connection technology aimed at building corporate, private or public networks. The technology is based on the use of so-called multiple access points (hot-spots), to which client terminals are connected. Wi-Fi technology is described by many specifications (standards), which is reflected in their name by the last letter (for example, IEEE 802.11g).
Based on Wi-Fi technology, public Internet access points have been created in cafes, hotels, airports and other places. Connecting a device to such points is as simplified as possible and requires entering a network identifier (SSID), username and password.

Bluetooth module:

Technology Bluetooth implements wireless connection of devices via a secure radio channel in the 2.4 GHz range. The technology is based on the use of profiles (services) as tools for performing specific tasks (audio gateway, hands-free, headset, file transfer, dial-up networking, serial port, etc.). Each profile contains a specific set of operations and defines possible areas of interaction between devices.
With a Bluetooth connection, devices can be located at a distance of up to ten meters from each other, and therefore, the development of wireless accessories is one of the prerogatives of this technology.

Bluetooth stereo support:

bluetooth stereo or A2DP(Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) - a Bluetooth profile or service designed to transmit music in stereo sound. Devices that support the A2DP profile allow you to listen to music using wireless Bluetooth headphones, thereby freeing you from the limitations imposed by traditional wired stereo headsets.

Connection to PC:

By connecting the device to a personal computer, you can quickly and conveniently edit telephone entries or organizer notes, save important SMS messages or backup copies of the device’s contents on your PC, download various pictures, melodies, photos or video clips, and access the Internet.
Depending on the characteristics of the device, connection to a PC is carried out using an interface cable, infrared port, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi modules.

Audio jack:

Type of connector for connecting external audio devices (wired headsets, headphones, speakers). Many modern smartphones use a universal connector, such as USB Type-C or Lightning, for audio output, charging and data transfer.

Messages

SMS:

SMS(Short Messages Service) or short text messages are an alternative way to exchange information over cellular networks. Most devices support receiving and sending SMS messages in both English and Russian. Type the desired text, for example, “Darling, I’m home. I kiss you and am waiting for you,” and within a few seconds it will be delivered to the mobile device you specified.
In addition, based on the SMS service, a variety of SMS services are provided, from weather forecasts and exchange rates, to dating and downloading simple melodies or pictures.

MMS:

MMS(Multimedia Messaging Service) is a universal technology for exchanging multimedia messages, which is a development of the idea of short SMS messages. In addition to plain text, an MMS message can contain color pictures and photographs, sound files of various formats or short videos. In addition, MMS messages can consist of several frames, representing a kind of animation.
When sending multimedia messages, GPRS or EDGE packet data transmission is used. You can send MMS messages either to a device compatible with this technology or to email.

Email:

Built-in email client is an analogue of programs for working with e-mail on a personal computer, but in a slightly limited version. As a rule, an E-mail client allows you to send and receive emails, as well as small attachments in the form of files with pictures or ringtones.

Alerts

Vibration alert:

In situations where the use of sound notification is not entirely appropriate or is completely useless, built-in vibration alert will inform you about an incoming call or other event by a slight shaking of the device body. For example, at a lecture or meeting, near a busy highway or at a noisy party.

Additional functions

Sensors:

Accelerometer(or G-sensor) - sensor of the device’s position in space. As a main function, the accelerometer is used to automatically change the orientation of the image on the display (vertical or horizontal). Also, the G-sensor is used as a pedometer; it can control various functions of the device by turning or shaking.
Gyroscope- a sensor that measures rotation angles relative to a fixed coordinate system. Capable of measuring rotation angles in several planes simultaneously. A gyroscope together with an accelerometer allows you to accurately determine the position of the device in space. Devices that use only accelerometers have lower measurement accuracy, especially when moving quickly. Also, the capabilities of the gyroscope can be used in modern games for mobile devices.
Light sensor- a sensor that sets the optimal brightness and contrast values for a given light level. The presence of a sensor allows you to increase the battery life of the device.
Proximity sensor- a sensor that detects when the device is close to your face during a call, turns off the backlight and locks the screen, preventing accidental clicks. The presence of a sensor allows you to increase the battery life of the device.
Geomagnetic sensor- a sensor for determining the direction of the world in which the device is directed. Tracks the orientation of the device in space relative to the magnetic poles of the Earth. The information received from the sensor is used in mapping programs for terrain orientation.
Atmospheric pressure sensor- sensor for precise measurement of atmospheric pressure. It is part of the GPS system, allows you to determine altitude above sea level and speed up location determination.
Touch ID- fingerprint identification sensor.

Illumination / Gyroscope / Proximity / Accelerometer / Geomagnetic

Satellite navigation:

GPS(Global Positioning System) is a satellite navigation system that provides measurements of distance, time, speed and determines the location of objects anywhere on Earth. The system is developed, implemented and operated by the US Department of Defense. The basic principle of using the system is to determine location by measuring distances to an object from points with known coordinates - satellites. The distance is calculated by the delay time of signal propagation from sending it by the satellite to receiving it by the antenna of the GPS receiver.
Monoblock (regular, classic, brick) is the most versatile and common type of case in a traditional form factor without any opening or sliding parts.
Monoblock with flip(with lid) - a classic type case with an additional lid covering the main keyboard.
Folding(folding bed, book, frog) - a case of this type consists of two halves that fold out together. Typically, the main and, if available, additional displays are located in the upper part, and the keyboard block is located in the lower part.
Slider(sliding) - the body consists of two halves that slide apart relative to each other. Until recently, cases of this form factor were typical for expensive fashion models.
Rotating(rotator) - perhaps the most unusual type of case, when the front half rotates relative to the rear half by 180 or 360 degrees. Due to its design features, it is rarely used.
:

Some models are designed specifically for harsh or aggressive operating conditions. Taking into account the increased requirements, the body of such models is made more durable, shock-resistant, dust- and moisture-proof. In its design, the housing may contain rubberized or metal parts. However, it should be remembered that excessive loads can damage even the most protected mechanism.

AT IFA 2016 in Berlin, Caterpillar presented several new smartphones, but I didn’t tell you about them, although I was at the stand then and even prepared beautiful photographs of the devices. The fact is that the devices turned out to be frankly boring and, in my opinion, passable. Cat has already done all this before and, in fact, offered the same smartphones in a slightly modified design. And when we are talking about protected devices, which are definitely not replaced every year according to the season, but at most are replaced if the old one was destroyed, this approach does not seem correct. And finally, Cat showed something truly new.

First, the Cat S60 has decent performance. Don't be confused by the screen resolution, 1280x720 pixels is quite sufficient for 4.7 inches. The display itself is not bad, not at the level of modern flagships, but not in the budget handset segment either.

I think there is no point in talking about design. Large hardware keys are needed so that they can be pressed with large gloves. Inserts and plugs - to protect the housing.

The smartphone is declared to be waterproof and shock-resistant: the device is guaranteed to withstand falls from a height of up to 1.8 meters without affecting operation and can remain under water for about an hour at a depth of up to 5 meters. I haven't checked. The smartphone is heavy, massive, looks brutal and severe.

On the front panel at the top and bottom there are distance switches for the thermographic camera (2 and 5 meters), I hope dear readers will tell you in the comments what they are for.

The thermal imager mode is turned on in the camera settings, you see the image obtained in the infrared range, as well as approximate temperature values in different parts of the frame.

Examples of photos taken in thermal imaging mode:

Of course, first of all, this device is unusual due to the presence of an additional thermographic camera (by the way, how can it be used on a smartphone?), but it is also a new flagship for Cat.

Last year, the company presented smartphones with outdated characteristics, unremarkable for anything except protection, and the S60 is a robust device in all respects, protected, running the latest version of Android and with a very capacious battery. The price of the smartphone in the USA is $650; the Cat S60 will also be sold in Russia, but there is no information on the price yet. If you are planning to buy a rugged device this year, you should wait for the official ruble price, because the smartphone definitely deserves attention.

The well-known manufacturer of construction equipment CATerpillar has been dictating fashion in the rugged smartphone market for many years. Everyone is trying to imitate the American brand, because its decisions are often ahead of the rest.

Thermal imager

The durable plastic case is enclosed in a metal frame, which makes the phone a typical representative of the protected class. But there is a “zest”, which is the built-in Flir thermal imager. It is located next to the main 13-megapixel camera and makes it possible to see the temperature of objects in real time. For example, a thermal imager will serve as an excellent working tool for police officers or construction workers, and in everyday life it will help determine the readiness of a steak or find out how hot your girlfriend is.

Protection

The security of the smartphone is manifested in the ability to dive under water to a depth of 5 meters, as well as in the shock resistance of the case, which can easily survive a fall from a height of 1.8 m. For emergencies, a special “SOS” key is provided on the left side of the device, hidden under a plug to prevent accidental pressing.

Power

The device has atypically powerful hardware for this class of devices, which is represented by a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor and 3 GB of RAM. The internal data storage has a capacity of 32 GB, the memory can be expanded using microSD flash drives. Considering the low screen resolution (1280x720 pixels) and the original Android 6.0, the smartphone has very good performance. And the high maximum brightness of the display will allow you to see the image on it in any conditions.

Orientation

The smartphone will be highly appreciated by builders, hunters, active athletes and simply anyone who needs an indestructible device with a high-quality build. Plus, it will help you always stay connected - the 3800 mAh battery provides 3-4 days of operation on a single charge.

The collaboration between two legendary companies, Caterpillar and FLIR, has resulted in the creation of a completely new device. The Cat S60 is a shockproof and waterproof smartphone with built-in thermal imaging.

Caterpillar and FLIR presented the world's first smartphone with a thermal imager

The Mobile World Congress exhibition opens in Barcelona on February 22, but most of the new mobile technology products for 2016 are known long before the presentation. Cat S60 has become the new flagship of Caterpillar's rugged smartphones.

Heavy-duty Cat smartphones are known to many industrialists, builders and the military. Familiar to representatives of extreme professions and lovers of active recreation. The new smartphone has two unique features: a Flir infrared camera and a waterproof case, the protection class of which allows immersion in water to a depth of 5 meters for an hour.

Such a device was to be expected; the company has been producing miniature thermal imaging matrices, the size of a ten-kopeck coin, for several years now. The first “swallows” were thermal imagers, which are attached to the smartphone in the form of an additional device -.

The first generation of the gadget was made in the form of a special case that can be used with only one model of smartphone (iPhone 5), which seriously narrowed the circle of potential buyers of the device. The second generation, which entered the market in 2015, is already more universal and connects to any smartphone based on iOS and Android. And now a combined apparatus for industrial and special purposes is presented.

In essence, the Cat S60 simply comes with an independent thermal imaging camera housed within the phone body. It uses the same sensor and performs the same functions: it takes an instantaneous thermographic image, measures surface temperature and can record both single frames and thermal video. Resolution is limited to VGA (640 by 480) pixels. The screen is compatible with gloves.

Where is it applicable?

The new gadget will be useful during search and rescue operations, when the bodies of victims may be hidden by smoke or invisible behind vegetation. Police officers when catching criminals. A heavy-duty smartphone with a thermal imager will be useful for builders and energy auditors to inspect buildings and electrical equipment. For divers and underwater hunters to detect fish on the sand, by superimposing a visible image on a thermal image, the contours of objects that you might not immediately notice are drawn more clearly. For travelers to observe wild animals and to avoid getting lost in fog or at night. Formula 1 engineers have long used thermal imaging to optimize the power systems of the world's most advanced cars.

What is inside?

The characteristics of the Cat S60 smartphone, although they do not reach the level of top models, can definitely not be called weak. Let's take a closer look at the technical specifications of the S60.

  • OS Android 6.0 Marshmallow;
  • Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor with Adreno 405 graphics chip;
  • Supports GSM/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA, 4G LTE (TD/FDD-LTE) networks;

The Bullitt Group, which makes the phone under the Cat brand, says it conducted a drop test. They dropped the phone from a height of 1.8 meters 26 times to ensure that its front and corners could withstand being dropped onto concrete without causing internal damage.
