Review of the Samsung Galaxy Note9 smartphone: almost flawless. Pleasantly surprised, but nothing more

Preliminary verdict

Better than previous phones in the series in every way, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a bigger screen, a bigger battery and a massive storage capacity of up to 1TB. The camera will be better, and the Bluetooth S-Pen can activate custom shortcuts remotely. But the price also matches (and even exceeds) the demands of the iPhone X. Is the Note 9 worthy of the inflated price tag? We'll find out in our review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

  • Beautiful 6.4-inch Infinity Display;
  • Large battery and memory;
  • Future camera update;
  • Quick access to the stylus via Bluetooth;
  • Expensive;
  • Many small updates;
  • Does not support HDR video;
  • Dear (must repeat);

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is a little bigger and a little sexier, and a little more powerful, than all previous Note phones, but to be clear: it's also much more expensive.

This is the biggest Android smartphone that will definitely grab your attention in 2018 with a huge 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display, a huge 4000 mAh battery for all-day use with 512 GB memory and 8 GB RAM.

The microSD card slot supports cards up to 512GB (which Samsung will gladly sell you), so this could be the first smartphone with 1TB of storage.

The good news is that the Note 9 isn't actually bigger than last year's 6.3-inch Note 8, and it also inherits many of the same features from this year's 5.8-inch Galaxy S9 and 6.8-inch Galaxy S9 Plus.

The camera is better, you get a dual 12MP camera on the back adopting dual aperture technology with Super Slow Motion recording capability. AR Emoji are back with some avatar tweaks, but rest assured, your avatar will still look different from you, according to the first Galaxy Note 9 early review tests.

Exclusive to the Note 9 camera is an automatic scene optimizer and a defect detection function, together they significantly improve photos (Samsung has recently developed a habit of transferring similar functions to older smartphones).

The S-Pen now supports Bluetooth for remote control functions, which, unlike the Bixby button, are customizable. Want to pose for a photo from a few meters away. The S-Pen helps you do this and more.

The bad news is that the price is much higher. Get ready to shell out the price tag of the iPhone X for the entry-level model with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. The Galaxy Note 9 is aimed at power and business users, according to Samsung - the physical size, storage capacity, price and battery capacity tell you that.

The company sees Note buyers as people who spend a lot of time on their phone and want the best - we're talking about people who buy the best receiver, the best TV, and so on.

We're still testing the new Note 9, but we can already tell that the first competitor will be the Galaxy S9 Plus - that is, when you're looking for a giant feature phone with a stylus and hate saving money.

The current Samsung Galaxy Note 8 remains the main threat to this update, which is driven by the nature of the Note 9 update.

SAMSUNGGALAXYNOTE 9: RELEASE DATE AND PRICES

  • Sales start date – August 24;
  • Price similar to iPhone X;
  • $1000 (RUR 60,000) for 128/6 GB | $1250 (75,000 rubles) for 512 / 8 GB;

The release date (start of sales) of Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is August 24, earlier than anyone expected. Galaxy Note 8 was released on September 15 last year.

The theory is that Samsung wants to get the Note 9 out of the close launch window of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 9, which are expected in early September.

Speaking of Samsung competing with Apple, the Galaxy Note 9's price rivals Apple's phone, but doesn't outshine it like we'd hoped.

The price of the Galaxy Note 9 is $1,000 (RUR 60,000) for a smartphone with 128 GB of internal memory and 6 GB of RAM, and for RUR 75,000 you get 512 GB and 8 GB of RAM.

Yes, this entry-level 128GB configuration is double the 64GB storage of the iPhone X at the same price, but the price has increased by several thousand over the Note 8 release price. Pre-orders open on August 10th.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 offers the following colors: Ocean Blue with a yellow S-Pen (which writes with yellow digital ink for added effect) and Lavender Purple with a purple stylus (which writes with purple digital ink). There is also the classic Midnight Black.

Until now, we do not have exact information on the release in Russia, but we are relying on the European release, which usually corresponds to our country - August 24. Available colors vary by region.

SAMSUNG S-PEN: NEWTRICKSNOTE 9

  • The Bluetooth stylus has custom shortcuts;
  • Great for distance photography, up to 10m;
  • Fast charging built into the phone;

The new S-Pen is a stellar turn for the Note 9, capable of magic tricks made possible by Bluetooth from up to 10 meters away.

Samsung has managed to squeeze a small battery and tiny antenna with energy-efficient Bluetooth into an unchanged stylus that's now capable of multiple remote functions, we're impressed.

What can you do exactly? We were able to remotely launch the camera app with a long press on the tip of the S-Pen, switch the camera to auto detection mode with one tap, and take a group photo with two taps.

This is much simpler than setting the camera timer, which Samsung hid in the camera settings menu last year, making the feature not as convenient as being able to wave your hand in front of the lens to start the camera's gesture-triggered timer.

Samsung is making the S-Pen button customizable. Here are the solutions mentioned by the manufacturer:

  • Camera: camera flip | snapshot;
  • Camera: camera flip | video recording;
  • Player: play and pause (music) | next track;
  • Photo gallery: next photo | previous photo;

Samsung provides a software development kit (SDK) for third-party apps to take advantage of the available shortcuts, so they'll be customizable as long as app developers maintain the functionality.

The S-Pen will have to charge, but Samsung says a 40-second charge will give you 30 minutes of stylus use.

We'll have to test how long the stylus lasts with a full battery in our full review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, but we can already say that holding the S-Pen in your hands and charging it will be much easier than the Apple Pencil from the iPad Pro.

Simply place the S-Pen inside your smartphone and it will start charging when not in use. There is nowhere to hide the Apple Pencil, and plugging it into the charging port is a very dangerous solution.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Blue Ocean gets a bright yellow S-Pen, offering an attractive contrast. The stylus writes with yellow digital ink, while the lavender phone with the purple stylus writes with purple ink.

All colors support similar Air Command functionality. You can draw, take notes, annotate screenshots, translate external text, and send live messages (a trick from last year's S-Pen).

Samsung says Bluetooth functionality allows the S-Pen to evolve, but we can't help but notice another contrast.

Shortcuts like the ability to take photos remotely will help unlock a whole new level of photography, according to Samsung, and while this sounds useful for fans of dramatic selfies (the manufacturer featured a user filming themselves from a sofa as an example), the Note 9 may not have the right audience for such functions. But it's still a good idea.

GALAXYNOTE 9: FIRST 1TB SMARTPHONE

  • 512 GB internal memory / 8 GB RAM;
  • 128 GB internal memory / 6 GB RAM;
  • Memory cardmicroSD 512 GB allows you to get 1 TB;

It's no surprise that Samsung, among the leading manufacturers, was the first to launch a 1TB smartphone that rivals most laptops available today. Samsung realizes this achievement with internal 512 GB of flash memory, as well as 512 GB microSD memory cards.

The Galaxy Note 9 is presented as a phone that will never complain about running out of memory. Deleting a game or previously downloaded movies isn't something you'll have to worry about—take all the photos you want at full resolution, and 4K videos whenever you want, no more compromises. 8GB of RAM is also probably best suited for a desktop in Samsung Dex mode, a secondary display system running virtualization software.

DeX is easier to use with the Galaxy Note 9 because, unlike the Note 8, which requires a physical dock, all you need to connect to your PC is an HDMI adapter.

Of course, 512 GB of memory and 8 GB of RAM is the model in which the amazing price of the Galaxy Note 9 flourishes. The base model with 128 GB and 6 GB of RAM is “cheaper” by 15,000 rubles.

At these prices, you're wondering: Do I really need a phone with 1TB of storage? Am I also going to spend money on a 512GB microSD card? Could cloud storage make this memory irrelevant in the future?

GALAXYNOTE 9: 4000 MAH BATTERY

  • Significantly enlarged 4000 mAh battery;
  • GalaxyS9 offered 3000 mAh, butS9Plus – 3500 mAh;
  • Fast charging and fast wireless charging;

The Note 9's nominal battery capacity also went beyond the limits, breaking through the ceiling of 4000 mAh.

Samsung is finally offering a larger battery after the Note 7 recall, with the manufacturer promising an 8-step safety check to ensure the phone doesn't catch fire, something we saw two years ago.

And while the memory sizes come in two configurations, the battery size is fortunately shared between both phones. You also get fast charging features and fast wireless charging.

GALAXYNOTE 9: DESIGN, DISPLAY AND OTHERS

  • Expandable 6.4" display with slight resizing;
  • Includes fingerprint scanner, slotmicroSD and headphone jack;

Samsung's Super AMOLED display doesn't need modification to look great. It's still the best display on the market, and only gets better with new Samsung phones year after year.

The Note 9's 6.4-inch screen has grown by a tenth of an inch compared to the Note 8's 6.3-inch screen, a change that few people will notice until they whip out a measuring tape (which we used in our Note 9 review).

The Infinity Infinity Display is extremely bright and durable. And even though the tall 18:9 (or in this case 18.5:9) aspect ratio is featured on virtually every 2018 flagship smartphone, Samsung's curved panels are unparalleled.

The Galaxy Note 9's size has also changed relative to the Note 8, but perhaps not in the way you think. It's slightly wider and slightly shorter than the Note 8, with dimensions of 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8 mm (Note 8 - 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6 mm).

It also weighs a little more: 201 grams versus 195 grams. It's not small or light, but it's comfortable in the hands, better than the S9 Plus in some ways thanks to its less rounded design.

Here are two features Samsung gives you to beat the iPhone X: a headphone jack and a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

The Note 9 is water- and dust-resistant with an IP68 rating, which remains the same whether the S-Pen is installed on the phone or not. New for the Note 9 are stereo speakers (like the S9 and S9 Plus).

What you don't yet get with Apple's latest phone: a fingerprint scanner, which acts as an alternative to the retina scanner and facial recognition.

The scanner is located on the back of the Note 9 and is located in the center this time. The Galaxy Note 8 offered a fingerprint scanner, but it was off-center, resulting in fingerprints on the camera lens. Many people hated this decision.

GALAXYNOTE 9: RUNNING TIME AND CAMERAS

  • Inherits the camera's dual apertureS9Plus;
  • Wide-angle and telephoto dual camera;
  • Survey optimizer improvements and perspectiveAI;

Samsung offers a robust dual-camera unit with the Note 9, with the main camera backed by a flash and a telephoto lens. The S9 Plus offers a good idea of what to expect, but Samsung promises better photography quality with the Note 9.

The dual 12-megapixel main camera relies on dual-aperture technology to switch between an f/1.5 aperture for shooting in low-light conditions and an f/2.4 aperture for shooting in normal lighting conditions. The S9 Plus promises positive results even in the darkest shooting conditions, boosting the Galaxy's ranking as the best camera phone on the market.

The secondary camera allows you to use the x2 optical zoom, delivering clear telephoto photos when you're too far away from your subject. The aperture in this mode is set to f/2.4 and, like the main lens, the telephoto lens has optical image stabilization (OIS) to compensate for hand shake.

The Note 9's front camera is 8 megapixels and includes auto focus, a first for a Note phone. Samsung packs the camera app with an endless number of options and modes: AR stickers, automatic switching to wide-angle group photo mode, and Super Slow Motion video at 960 fps at 720p resolution. It's one of the most robust camera apps on the market, yet extremely easy to use.

Samsung demonstrated how the Note 9's camera identifies and adapts to different photographic conditions with a new Scene Optimization feature.

This solution adjusts white and color balance based on 20 preset scenes, including sunsets, flowers, food, birds, text and so on. Compared to the six-month-old S9 Plus, we can see that the Note 9's camera shows off much more detail in flower macro photography.

The camera needs to understand what it's looking at and uses the same technology to eliminate issues including blinking, photo blur, lens smudges and backlighting.

Sometimes the phone will select the best group photo, other times it will pop up a message telling you that you need to clean your dirty camera lens.

While rival Android smartphones support mobile HDR video recording, we don't see signs of that technology here - we'll probably have to wait for the Galaxy S10.

Obviously, we'll be putting this camera through its paces as we continue our full Galaxy Note 9 review.

GALAXYNOTE 9:ANDROID, INTERFACE AND APPLICATIONS

  • Android Oreo, Note 9 skipsAndroid Pie;
  • ExclusiveFortnite (for a very short period);
  • Samsung Pay, Bixby AI andAR Emoji;

Samsung is quietly skipping the Android 9 Pie release this week, shipping the Galaxy Note 9 with Android Oreo. Not that you'll notice it under Samsung's interface.

It's not too bad. Samsung Experience software has been greatly improved in 2018, with helpful tips on how to navigate the deep and complex operating system. It's much better than Samsung's bloated TouchWiz firmware on older Android phones, and all the users who hate UIs probably haven't tried Samsung Experience.

Samsung smartphones (Galaxy S7 and above) will be the first to have access to the popular game Fortnite on Android through Samsung's Game Center app.

This is a six-day exclusive access (starting with the Note 9 launch) designed to give Samsung phone users a head start, however, the game will have to be reinstalled after this period. Additionally, the Galaxy Note 9 and Tab S4 get exclusive Fortnite skins that will last forever.

Samsung Pay is another app worth noting. It's still our favorite way to make contactless payments simply because you can pay for things using credit cards that Apple Pay and Android Pay typically don't accept. Why no one followed Samsung.

Bixby AI assistant is back again, but it wasn't mentioned in the release and wasn't tested in the Note 9 hands-on review, we have yet to learn about AR Emoji in the full Galaxy Note 9 review to bring you the full details.

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 9: FIRSTOPINION

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 offers a lot of interesting features - and a price hike that won't appeal to many. The S-Pen gets remote control tricks, you get unrivaled storage capacity, and battery life sees a stunning increase, along with the huge promise of an AI camera.

The last two advantages require full testing, but the first impression is very favorable.

It's just that you'll be paying outrageous prices for this package of small upgrades when the Note 8 is a great phablet at a lower price with nice discounts. When Samsung talked about its ideal user being the best AV receiver, the best TV, and so on, it may have forgotten to mention the best plane, the best yacht, and the best sports car.

The iPhone X brought prices to this level, and we complained about it too. Samsung at least offers "more" for your money.

If you are not interested in the questions “how to choose a smartphone” and “which company is better”, you are not limited by price, do not want to make compromises and want to become the owner of only a top mobile device on Android - we present to your attention the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which will soon time will appear in the “new items” section.

What our review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 smartphone will include - advantages and disadvantages, the cost of the device, its technical features, comparison with the previous model - Note 8, and Apple's flagship - iPhone X, and much more.

The information will be of interest to those who want to know what the “latest word in technology” looks like today and, perhaps, plans to purchase a device in the future, for example, when the cost drops and the device becomes more accessible.

Visually, the smartphone is no different from its predecessor. Technically, it also does not contain any innovations. However, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is the result of optimization and integration of the most modern, but already verified on other models, technologies.
Let's take a closer look at the smartphone. Reviews from ordinary users, for obvious reasons, are not yet available online, but the number of reviews on Note 9 is off the charts. And, as you know, professional reviewers can talk much more interestingly and meaningfully about all aspects of a new device.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 phone was first announced in 2018, with sales starting on August 24, 2018. On this day, delivery of smartphones for which pre-orders have been placed begins. The device appears on store shelves a week later.

Let's take a closer look at the parameters that can be varied when ordering:

  • First, the color: indigo, black and copper. The mysterious name “indigo” hides a blue body and a bright yellow S-Pen. The other two options offer a monochromatic color scheme, and the colors chosen are quite classic for Samsung;
  • Secondly, the amount of memory. 128 GB and 512 GB options are available. The price difference between these two options is quite significant - 20,000 rubles. Therefore, before placing an order, you should think about whether you need such a volume. Moreover, the volume can be expanded by installing microSD;
  • Thirdly, the amount of RAM. Actually, this parameter is associated with the amount of internal memory. The 128 GB version will have only 6 GB available, while the 512 GB version will be accompanied by as much as 8 GB of RAM. It is worth noting that this is the first smartphone in the world with such a large amount of RAM.

Advantages:

  • High autonomy - thanks to a more powerful battery, the device’s charge lasts for almost a whole day of active use;
  • The most top-end hardware available from Samsung today;
  • Excellent readability in the sun, thanks to the high brightness of the screen;
  • Large amount of built-in storage and the ability to improve this figure to 640 GB or 1 TB;
  • Convenient and intuitive interface;
  • Very fast fourth generation networks;
  • A convenient screen that allows you to perform various manipulations - from processing photographs to drawing and creating presentations;
  • Excellent high-resolution camera, exposure, brightness and saturation are automatically adjusted to the scene;
  • Availability of new interesting features that promote user creativity;
  • Strict form and stylish, sophisticated design;
  • A stylus with many capabilities, which is a rarity in smartphones.

Flaws:

  • High cost of the device;
  • Fingerprints remain on the case;
  • You can manually remove only some of the applications installed on Android by default;
  • In low light, photo quality leaves much to be desired.

About the cost of a smartphone

If your shopping list includes only the best manufacturers and popular models, you are used to buying flagship devices, then most likely you do not really care how much the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 smartphone costs.

However, we will focus on this for those for whom such purchases are not too easy.
Even taking into account the wide capabilities and excellent characteristics, it cannot be said that the latest version of the laptop is inexpensive. After all, the average price for this device is 69,990 rubles (377,060 tenge or 1,050 dollars) with a configuration of 128 GB + 6 GB, or, as mentioned earlier, 20 thousand more expensive, that is, 89,990 rubles (485,000 tenge or 1,350 dollars) for the 512 GB + 8 GB configuration.

For comparison, the previous model, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 smartphone, 64GB, costs 38,700 rubles, which is almost 40% cheaper. At the same time, this model was announced and went on sale only a year ago, which means it has not yet become outdated. At the same time, the starting price of the device was 56,000 rubles, from which we can conclude that even top-end smartphones depreciate quite quickly.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

For those who are not yet ready to purchase a flagship, we can advise you to look at the ratings of high-quality smartphones and choose some other model. Note that the model range of this manufacturer is quite large and every user will be able to choose something for themselves.

Don't forget that there are budget Chinese brands that can offer almost the same features for less money. Although this rule does not always work - for example, a little earlier, the Chinese brand Huawei introduced the Mate RS Porsche Design smartphone with 512 GB for 147,000 rubles.

Let's return to Note 9. The Koreans offer an excellent credit program for it - 3,900 rubles per month will allow you, after a year, to exchange version 9 for the next one without additional payments, or for an additional 3,900 rubles - to the Samsung Galaxy S10 when it goes on sale. For those who absolutely need a flagship, but don’t yet have the required amount, this is an excellent solution. How expedient it is is up to you to decide, because you will have to pay for more than one year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs. Note 9

So, let's look at the main differences between Note 9, which is about to hit store shelves, and its predecessor, Note 8:

  • Unlocking: the fingerprint is now more conveniently located, it has moved down and now the user will touch the camera more often;
  • Camera: there is a function to recognize and eliminate defects such as blinking, spots on the lens, blur. Photos and videos are of truly impressive quality. Thanks to the “scene optimization” function, even a photographed sunset will not lose its sharpness and color saturation.

You can see the device taking photos below:

If you are interested in how the Note 9 takes photographs at night, then below is an example photo:

Note that every second review of this model illustrates that in poor lighting conditions, the flagship is noticeably inferior to the Galaxy S9 and its predecessor Note 8.

Photos taken with the front camera turn out quite well, but with high magnification, the results are still not ideal.

As for the other parameters:

  • Screen: larger by 0.1 inches, pixel density has become higher. The Note 9's brightness is 427.7 cd/m2. This is a fairly good indicator, which automatically increases to 721 cd/m2 in the sun. The white balance on the screen is excellent. The color range is more than saturated, but, if desired, you can easily adjust it and make the colors more natural;
  • Operating system: The Note 8 still only comes with Android 8.0, while the Note starts with 8.1 Oreo;
  • S-Pen: now works as a Bluetooth remote control. The stylus allows you to remotely control music, play movies, switch browsers, flip through slides in presentations, and do much more. Charging the pen takes only 40 seconds, and on the received charge it works for about half an hour or 200 touches;

  • The updated Exynos 9810 chip provides high performance, although it should be noted that the Exynos 8895 installed in the Note 8 is still very good. And yet the Note 9 is even faster than its predecessor;
  • RAM and internal memory: Note 9 is not limited like Note 8 6 and 64 GB. It is possible to choose a more powerful version of 512 GB and 8 GB. You can install a 512 GB memory card in your smartphone and become the owner of 1 Terabyte, which will be very convenient, for example, for photographers and people who are used to storing a large amount of information on their device;
  • Battery: Note 9's battery power has increased quite significantly compared to Note 8 (from 3300 mAh to 4000 mAh);
  • Sound: Note 9 now supports Dolby Atmos and comes with headphones from Harman/Kardon. The sound quality is excellent both in headphones and through speakers.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs. Apple iPhone X

It is impossible not to compare the Korean flagship with its main competitor - the iPhone X, which was announced almost a year ago - in early September 2017.

The cost of the devices is approximately the same. The Apple iPhone X 256 GB smartphone today costs 73,000 rubles, 64 GB - 65,000 rubles. The significant difference is that you cannot insert an SSD card into the iPhone and thereby expand the memory capacity, which is limited to 256 GB.

The laptop has a more powerful battery (4000 mAh versus 2700 mAh), but it also has a larger screen (6.4 inches versus 5.8 inches) - which means it consumes more energy. As for resolution, the leader is the Notebook with OLED 2960*1440 pixels versus 2436*1125 for the iPhone.

Both devices support fast wireless charging and are waterproof. The back panel collects fingerprints equally well.

In terms of unlocking, the iPhone X is more interesting - it has the Face ID function, while the Samsung still only supports a fingerprint.

The quality of the cameras is approximately at the same level, both devices have their own interesting features. For example, Apple’s “live photos”, which are implemented in Samsung’s multi-frame shooting mode.

It makes no sense to compare the OS; we can only note that iOS updates are released much more often than Android.

We can say that these two smartphones are equally good, and the choice should be made only based on what kind of nonsense and operating system you are a fan of - Apple and iOS or Samsung and Android.

Who will be interested in the flagship

Samsung's Note series is positioned as a phablet - that is, a miniature tablet computer on which it is convenient to read, print or create documents.

In fact, it is difficult to identify a specific niche of consumers who would buy the Note line.

Definitely, it will be of interest to photographers and bloggers - after all, it allows you to store up to 1 Terabyte of information. Fans of various “heavy” games will also like it - due to the top-end hardware, nothing will slow down. Office capabilities here are also excellent, so the smartphone will be useful for those who often use a computer.

Where is it profitable to buy Note 9

This is the case when there is no difference, because the device is only available for pre-order. And, this means that it is most profitable to purchase it on the official Samsung website. By the way, there are a minimum of intermediaries on the market today offering a smartphone at the same price, even in large cities.

However, if you pre-order through Samsung, you will receive a free wireless multi-charger, which can be delivered along with the phone immediately after the start of sales. It is worth noting that its cost when purchased separately is 7,000 rubles.
By the way, it is already known that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is ahead of the Galaxy S9 in terms of the number of pre-orders. However, it does not live up to the level of the previous model from the Galaxy Note line.

Device contents

What's included in the kit that comes with the Note 9? In fact, the set is quite standard and has become familiar to Samsung. All accessories are black, which adds additional charm:

  • Adapter from USB Type-C to regular USB;
  • Adapter from USB Type-C to micro-USB;
  • Cable for connecting to a computer and charging Type-C/Type-R;
  • 2 Amp charger;
  • Tool for replacing tips in the S-pen stylus;
  • AKG brand headphones (in earplug format) and replacement rubber bands for them, several sizes;
  • An envelope containing a paper clip for the SIM card slot and memory card, as well as service documentation.

And, in fact, the box itself, also made in black.

So, we got acquainted with the new flagship smartphone from Samsung - the Galaxy Note 9. The device’s technical parameters are quite comparable to a full-fledged personal computer and, as it were, hints that having the latter is no longer necessary.

This reliable and productive smartphone will become a faithful friend in business, but is also suitable for active games in between work, thanks to its powerful processor, good battery and huge screen. Although, of course, it is not advisable to buy such a smartphone solely for games.

Which model is better to buy is, of course, a matter of taste. And yet, if you want to become the owner of a stylish, large and powerful Android smartphone, then you should pay attention to the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which will be on sale soon.

Hello everyone Today I will tell you in simple terms what the Samsung Notes program is and you will be able to understand whether you need it or not. I found out that Samsung Notes is an application for taking notes on your phone. Samsung proprietary program. That is, we can already conclude that you need to delete only if you are absolutely sure that you will not write down anything, no notes. But new Samsung phones have a beautiful and large screen - and it’s very convenient to write something down on it, considering that there’s even a special S Pen stylus for this..

Notes from Samsung Notes are synchronized with the Samsung Cloud, but you can even import from Google Drive. You may also have the Samsung Connect program - designed to control other compatible devices, such as a washing machine, air conditioner, and you can customize the operating mode. In general, Samsung is introducing its innovative technologies.

It may also be that the Samsung Notes application will be a system one - then it will not be so easy to remove it. And if you delete it, there may be problems. In any case, if anything, use Titanium Backup, this is a tool for deleting, stopping or freezing applications

You know, I don’t recommend ignoring the possibility of creating such notes, it can be very convenient...

Here is an example of creating a note:

It’s convenient to create notes on your tablet:

I advise you to understand this application, because on such a cool phone:

Taking notes should be a pleasure!

With this application you can create:

  5. Android version above 5.0 is required, Russian language is supported;

Samsung Notes are cool notes!

Can the Samsung Notes app boot my phone?

My opinion is no. If the application has not been configured to do a specific job, then it may hang in the background and load the phone a little. Or noticeable. And at the same time it still consumes the battery.

Was it possible to believe such popularity seven years ago, when Samsung introduced the first Galaxy Note tablet phone? For the smartphone market, this is an eternity. Here, one unsuccessful device can become a real disaster. This happened two years ago with the Galaxy Note 7. Now this is in the past and Samsung is boldly offering a new model.

Galaxy Note 9 can be called the first announcement of the upcoming end-of-year holidays. Such honor also means great responsibility. Samsung sets the bar ahead of its competitors. The Galaxy Note line has always been great, and it should be this time too.

However, the smartphone market is always changing. Their prices continue to rise, so the question of price-quality ratio is becoming increasingly important. Now it is not enough just to offer a new generation processor and increase the storage capacity so that the device continues to be purchased.

Design

Samsung doesn't often change the appearance of its smartphones almost completely. And this time this did not happen. The Galaxy Note 9 is almost identical to last year's Galaxy Note 8. Don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. The previous device was very beautiful and high quality, the new one is the same. It has a premium look, glass and metal with curved edges. We are considering a blue version of the device with a yellow stylus. This contrast is unusual and seems something new. Although the glass collects smudges and dirt, it is relatively easy to wipe off.

The dimensions of the device differ little from its predecessor. The smartphone has become a little wider and thicker. The location of buttons and connectors has not changed. Luckily, Samsung is listening to customer feedback and has moved the fingerprint scanner under the rear camera. Now it's easier to reach it.

The engineers paid close attention to detail. Smartphones these days are phasing out the headphone jack to make room for other components. The Galaxy Note 9 has a headphone jack. There is also heart rate monitoring, an iris scanner, two speakers, a compartment for the S Pen stylus, and even wireless charging. Protection against water and dust IP68 is not forgotten.

S Pen

The Galaxy Note line wouldn't be itself if it didn't include the S Pen stylus. This year, particular attention is paid to this accessory. The appearance is no different from last year. In your hands it feels like a real pencil or pen. Samsung has added new functionality to it. There is support for the Bluetooth Low Energy communication standard, thanks to which the stylus can be used as a remote control. With it, you can take photos, scroll through images in the gallery and presentations, play videos and music.

All this is done without touching the smartphone screen. It will be interesting to see how third-party app developers find use for the stylus' capabilities. Samsung has released a development kit for them. The main purpose of the stylus remains in drawing and writing. If you have artistic talents, the 4096 pressure levels may come in handy.

Screen

The screen differs little from its predecessor. The Super AMOLED panel has grown by 0.1 inches to a size of 6.4 inches. The resolution is 1440 x 2960 pixels. The color temperature is approximately 6400 K, providing high color accuracy in the sRGB color range. These characteristics are almost identical, which means the highest quality.

Maximum brightness has increased to 575 nits in Adaptive display mode. The screen remains very pleasing to the eye thanks to high detail, rich colors, wide viewing angles and deep blacks. Video enhancement mode makes the picture even more attractive, just like when watching HDR-enabled videos on YouTube.

Curving at the sides of the screen has long been a hallmark of Samsung's flagship smartphones. There is nothing new here in this regard. The side panels still provide quick access to various actions with your smartphone.

Interface

There is nothing special to say here, since everything remains the same. The device runs Android 8.1, although it would be nice to see Android Pie here. The system is already distributed on Google Pixel smartphones, and Samsung would receive great gratitude from users if it released a device on it. The Samsung Experience shell on top of Android is no different from what is on the S9+. The interface has a minimalistic appearance. In keeping with Samsung tradition, there's plenty of extra functionality here for advanced users. The smartphone is more capable than other Android models, since it is aimed primarily at work.

The S Pen stylus makes some difference in the differences between the Android interface and other smartphones. It can be very useful when you need to sign a PDF document, make notes in the margins of a website, write a note on the screen, etc. The Bixby assistant has been updated, the functionality of which is gradually expanding. In particular, he understands voice commands better and better.

To turn a smartphone into a computer, there is no need to buy. Now you just need to use a regular USB-C > HDMI cable to access your desktop. In Russia, you need to pay about 7,000 rubles for this docking station, so saving this amount will be very useful. Now you simply connect your smartphone to the monitor and keyboard with a cable and it starts working like a computer.

Samsung has made changes to AR Emoji, but the functionality still remains child's play. She may look interesting in the first two minutes, but then she gets boring.

In general, in terms of interface, the Galaxy Note 9 does not bring anything revolutionary compared to the Galaxy Note 8. However, you should not break something that is not broken. No other smartphone has this level of practicality for work. With the help of the stylus, the functionality has become even wider.

Performance and Memory

Naturally, the new smartphone receives the latest hardware components. The Russian version will use the Samsung Exynos 9810 processor, in the USA the Snapdragon 845. The review considers the version with a memory capacity of 6/128 GB. The device works without problems with applications, and with many at once. Its responsiveness is at the level of other modern flagships, that is, it responds to user actions very quickly.

In terms of gaming capabilities, this device also does not disappoint. It can handle any modern mobile games without difficulty. Benchmarks show a favorable picture. In real games, you will get high frame rates and smooth performance. The new liquid cooling system has a lot to thank for this. Despite this, even this will not save the case from heating up if you play for quite a long time.

The storage capacity has increased from the previous 64 GB. In addition, you can install a memory card up to 512 GB. The second version of the smartphone has 8/512 GB memory configurations. Thus, the storage capacity on this smartphone can reach 1 TB. Surely you have seen few computers with such value, but here you can carry so much data in your pocket.

Cameras

Smartphones often come with the same cameras as their predecessors, with minor improvements. This happened in the case of the Galaxy Note 9. It once again uses a dual camera, as in the Galaxy Note 8. In addition, there is a variable aperture, as in the Galaxy S9. As a result, the combination turned out to be the same as on the model. The main camera is a 12 MP wide-angle with optical image stabilization and an aperture of f/2.4 and f/1.5. The latter value is designed to improve the quality of pictures in low light. The second camera has a telephoto lens with 2x zoom and also has optical image stabilization. This will avoid shaking when you hold the device in your hands.

The camera works in the same way as on the Galaxy S9+. There are different shooting modes, such as panorama, Hyperlapse, slow motion, live focus, professional mode with manual settings. The only new feature is the optimization of scenes, where there are 20 different options. When the camera selects one of them, it changes the settings. If you don't like the result, you can disable this mode.

Image quality

We can say that the photographs are stunning. Whether you frequently share photos on social media or are a mobile photography enthusiast, the Galaxy Note 9 is suitable for a variety of shooting scenarios. The device takes excellent pictures on bright sunny days, providing a wide dynamic range and the highest clarity. Even without Live Focus mode, the natural level of bokeh is impressive.

When the lighting is not the best, the variable aperture comes into play and the pictures are also good. The camera performs well even with high contrast. Shadow detail is preserved, and highlights are dimmed enough to make a neutral exposure. When there is very little light, the aperture becomes f/1.5 and the shutter speed is reduced to collect more light. Many smartphones have difficulty in such conditions and the photos would be blurry, but on the Note 9 the stabilization copes. The detail may not be as clear, but the photographs are acceptable.

The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, as in the Galaxy S9 and S9+. The detail here is also good, there are wide-angle lenses. This is more than enough not only to photograph the face, but also the entire person at arm's length. There is also a background blur mode here, but it is too aggressive. Often it blurs the face instead of the background. The quality is not as high as on the Pixel 2.

Video quality

In terms of photography, everything is excellent, in terms of video, no worse. The maximum recording resolution is 3840 x 2160 pixels at 60 fps. This means incredibly clear, detailed video.

You shouldn't shoot at this speed in low light because the image will blur and create digital noise. In this situation, it is better to switch to 30 fps, the image will be of better quality. Exposure will be improved and detail will increase. You can control certain settings in Pro shooting mode, but not all of them can be changed while shooting. For example, ISO remains fixed. I wish Samsung would offer a true manual video mode, like the LG V line of smartphones does.

As with the Galaxy S9, the new device has super slow-motion video recording at 960 fps with a resolution of 720p. This can produce interesting shots, but detail is washed out due to the low resolution and a high ISO value is required. Standard slow motion is recorded at 240 fps with a resolution of 1080p. There is no duration limit, so there is no need to try to accurately guess the start time.

Multimedia

Thanks to the presence of dual speakers, one of which is located at the bottom next to the USB-C and the other in the phone shell, users will experience stereo sound. The quality is good, the volume of 74.6 dB is not inferior to the Galaxy Note 8. There are smartphones with more powerful speakers, but here at least there is no noticeable distortion and shrill sounds at maximum volume.

More and more smartphones are losing their headphone jack, but Samsung is still faithful to them. This makes you wonder why other developers are getting rid of them. The Galaxy Note 9 is a pretty sleek device, and the presence of a headphone jack doesn't stop it from having a lot of other functionality. Usually, when manufacturers remove this connector, they say that they are using the space inside the case for other purposes.

We also need to talk about watching videos on this smartphone. Thanks to the Super AMOLED screen, it turns out to be very rich and highly detailed. YouTube supports HDR, which improves the viewing experience. A video enhancement feature is available that increases brightness and contrast.

Call quality

Calling on the Galaxy Note 9 won't be a problem. You'll get pleasant sound, natural tones and enough volume to be heard in noisy environments. There is an additional volume mode if you need it. However, the standard volume will probably be enough.

Also, the interlocutor will hear you without any problems. There is a hint of distortion, but not enough to negatively impact the conversation experience. I was pleased with the speakerphone, voices can be distinguished and the volume is high.

Autonomy

Samsung tried to make the Galaxy Note 9 the longest-lasting smartphone in this line. The battery capacity has increased to 4000 mAh. Last year's Galaxy Note 8 only had a 3,300 mAh battery. Although it's hard to notice by eye, the thickness of the case has increased slightly to accommodate the battery inside. It is unlikely that anyone will object to this.

In battery life tests, the Galaxy Note 9 showed good results. The operating time between charges with the screen on was 8 hours 56 minutes. This is an hour ahead of the Galaxy Note 8 and also ahead of the Galaxy S9+. In everyday work, the smartphone will be able to last a full day even under heavy load. Usually by evening there is about 35% charge left.

The larger the battery capacity, the longer it takes to charge. In this case, not very long. It takes 109 minutes to charge from zero to 100%, which is not much faster than the Galaxy Note 8. There is fast wireless charging.

Conclusion

At first glance, there are several reasons why the Galaxy Note 9 is a fantastic smartphone. It produces clear photos, works for a long time without a power outlet, and is one of the few that offers a stylus. Few devices can compare with it in terms of functionality. However, this is the most expensive smartphone in the history of this line with a base price of $1000. In Russia this means a price of 70,000 rubles. For most people, this will be the main factor against buying a smartphone. However, if you can afford it, the device is unlikely to disappoint you.

The Galaxy Note 9 has been improved in many ways over its predecessor. This still does not allow us to call it a revolutionary device, which many hoped for. This is a fairly predictable evolutionary update. In almost every way he has improved, as he should after a year. The stylus is better and the camera is better, but if you have a Galaxy Note 8, there's little point in buying a new one. Essentially, it's the same Galaxy Note 8 in the same packaging.

If you have an older model, you should be pleased with the upgrade to the Galaxy Note 9. It can be safely recommended if you really need this kind of power and functionality. True, many features were borrowed from the Galaxy S9+ and no longer surprise anyone. In particular, the dual variable aperture camera is one example of this. However, the Galaxy Note 9 is in its own major league, where the number of players is very limited.

While various manufacturers are looking for excuses why they can’t provide this and that, the Galaxy Note 9 makes literally everything possible. We see that you can get a smartphone with phenomenal performance without losing the headphone jack. There is also an almost frameless screen without a notch, a dual camera with variable aperture, water protection, a premium appearance and the ability to turn your smartphone into a computer. Galaxy Note 9 lives up to expectations and makes the impossible possible.

Galaxy Note 9 as a daily smartphone.

“It's not easy every year,” said Koh, president and CEO of Samsung Mobile at the Galaxy Note 9 launch event. He talked about breaking boundaries with flagship smartphones, and after spending a few days with the Galaxy Note 9, we understand why he speaks.

The fingerprint scanner on the back has been moved under the dual cameras, which is much better than having it on the side. Even with this change, the phone is large enough that some people may find it difficult to reach the scanner.

REVIEW: CHARACTERISTICS AND NEW S-PEN

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 we tested is powered by the Exynos 9810 chipset that also powers the Galaxy S9. Combined with 6GB of RAM, the Note 9's interface flies, with apps launching and switching instantly. For advanced users, Samsung offers a version with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal memory.

Network performance has also been improved with the Galaxy Note 9 to support LTE at 1.2Gbps, although we couldn't find a network that was fast enough to support such speeds.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 relies on the stylus as its main difference from the competition, it features low energy Bluetooth and a rechargeable battery that can offer 30 minutes of use after 40 seconds of charging.

You can use the S-Pen to control presentations or the camera to take pictures and switch between the front and rear cameras. To be honest, we don't see much value in this solution, but Samsung also releases an SDK for app developers. It'll be interesting to see where this leads - we'd love to see Nintendo DS style games.

REVIEW: BATTERY

Samsung says that the Galaxy Note 9 offers the largest battery in the series' history. With a capacity of 4,000 mAh, the Note 9 has a 20% larger battery than its predecessor.

The first three days of using the Galaxy Note 9 were mixed in terms of battery life, which is to be expected from a new phone. Loading applications and setting them up while constantly connected to the network can consume battery power quite quickly. We'll leave the battery decision to the full review.

REVIEW: CAMERA UPDATE ( AI)

The cameras on the new Galaxy Note 9 are the same dual camera module that you might have seen on the Galaxy S9 Plus launched earlier this year. The camera array now has a horizontal orientation, but you get the same 12-megapixel primary sensor with dual aperture, as well as a 12-megapixel secondary sensor fixed at 2x zoom.

Samsung has made changes to the software, such as the camera app now getting scene recognition, which allows you to identify up to twenty scenarios and take better photos. We have seen a similar solution on other Android smartphones such as . You can turn this off if you don't like the software interfering with your photography process.

Samsung is also adding a flaw detection feature that kicks in immediately after you take a photo and tells you if the photo was blurry or if the person in the photo has their eyes closed. We tried to test this feature but couldn't get it to work.

Here are some sample photos of the Galaxy Note 9 camera in different lighting conditions.

REVIEW: MORE TESTS

At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 may seem like an iterative update that's very similar to last year's phone, but it's much more complex. Even though it doesn't offer revolutionary solutions, the Note 9 becomes the best Android smartphone currently available in the market.
