Where are Sony TVs made? Which TV is better: Sony or Samsung? Sony X93E, X94E, A1 and Z9D series support Dolby Vision

In 2018, Sony is adding another OLED model to its TV line. All other models are LCD TVs. And this year they moved the Z9D into the lineup from last year. Sony has added the X900F (XF90) with local dimming. Google's Android TV platform is included in most models, and support for Dolby Vision is expanding.

Sony lineup for 2018

It's fair to say that the 2018 lineup is largely a continuation of last year's lineup. At least for the spring lineup, Sony may add additional models in the fall. Last year's A1 OLED model, as well as 2016's Z9D TV, will carry over to 2018.

However, Sony's lineup looks strong, as the company will offer models based on both OLED technology and LCD displays. Sony will add a new A8 OLED that will have the same specs as the A1 but a different design. The company will also replace last year's XE90 with an updated XF90, which features full-array FALD LED lighting (previously called Direct LED) and an all-new motion imaging system called X-Motion Clarity. As with last year, the new 90 series models could prove to be some of the best value-for-money LCD TVs out there, especially if you want HDR included in the package.

More affordable LCD models (X850F and below) will use edge LED backlighting. While this allows for relatively thin and sleek TVs, such backlighting cannot precisely control the contrast and brightness required for HDR video playback. This refers to dynamic contrast and brightness, which depend on the backlight level. All of Sony's 2018 models, including Full HD TVs, will be "HDR compatible," but that means they'll be able to play back HDR video as normal, and not necessarily as HDR. If you need HDR, then you should aim for models in the higher class.

Dolby Vision will be included in models from XF90 and above

Speaking of HDR, Sony will be including support for HDR10 and HLG formats on every TV this year. Dolby Vision is also expanding and will be included in the X900F and above this year. This is good news considering that the lack of Dolby Vision in last year's X900E was a major drawback. However, keep in mind that Dolby Vision will require a firmware update, which Sony plans to release in the summer of 2018.

Sony will continue its partnership with Google, and all 4K models will come with the Android TV operating system. Along with the system, applications and games will be available on the Google Play Store, including Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube. 4K TVs will be running Android 7.0, but Sony has promised to install Android 8.0 (Oreo) through an update. Will also be built in with Android and Chromecast.

Those devices that will be produced in Europe will have two tuners. But this will only affect models from XF85 and above. The second tuner is used to record programs when the TV is connected to the first one. To do this you will have to purchase an external hard drive.

The 3D format has almost disappeared from the market from all manufacturers. Sony will only have one model with 3D support - the Z9D. And that’s because this model was released back in 2016.

All models with 4K resolution will be equipped with 4 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports, and will also include a Wi-Fi module. HD models will have two HDMI ports.

The new models will begin arriving in stores in March. Some models will appear throughout the year. So the list of models may be expanded before the end of the year.

Sony 2018 TVs will be labeled with the letter "F".

The popular Japanese brand continues to occupy one of the leading positions in electronics sales. What are the 2018 Sony TVs? What advantages do they have over their predecessors?

To answer these difficult questions, let’s study in detail the catalog of TV equipment from this manufacturer. There are both budget models and premium-class devices.

You need to choose a TV in accordance with the functionality of the equipment. Also consider your own financial capabilities. To avoid mistakes, study the labeling of this brand’s equipment. Then you can easily distinguish last year's model from the new one.

New technologies from Sony

Like other popular electronics manufacturers, Sony presented new TV models at the CES forum. Fans of equipment from the famous Japanese brand are offered models with an OLED screen and additional features: 4K support, Dolby Vision, Android TV, Google Assistant.

The features listed above are extremely important, but they were available in the 2017 premium models of Sony Bravia. In the process of creating a new collection of televisions, the developers focused on improving existing technologies.

The main task that was set for the engineers was to improve the transmission of sound from the Triluminos display. An improved version of the old technology received a new name - Acoustic Surface. Now audio transmission is carried out in a 3.1 configuration. Previous TV models had a 2.1 channel configuration.

The manufacturer offers customers OLED TVs of the A8F series with screen diagonals in the range of 55-65 inches. Last year, devices with similar functionality cost about $6,000. Now the price of the previous generation of TVs has dropped by 50%.

Sony BRAVIA KD-75XF9005

The company has not forgotten about the budget segment either. Consumers are offered LCD TVs of the X900F line with diagonals from 49 to 85 inches. New X-Motion Clarity technology has been implemented. It helps reduce image blur in dynamic scenes without losing image saturation.

The latest model range is equipped with powerful matrices - from 120 Hz. Together with X-Reality technology, it is possible to achieve high-quality, rich and realistic images. This is the main distinguishing feature of the 2018 Sony TV.

Sony TV markings

Before you start reviewing new products, you need to study in detail the intricacies of TV labeling. Sony's is clearer and more concise. Especially when compared with LG or Samsung. The marking remains virtually unchanged.

Sony XF85 series TV

The current European version was created back in 2016. From that moment on it remained almost identical. All information about the TV is encrypted in 9 characters (numbers and letters). Let's carefully study the marking features of the TV range from Sony.

Screen diagonal and device type

Marking of TV equipment mainly begins with the following letters:

  • KDL – for Full HD TVs or HD-ready models;
  • KD – Ultra HD with support for 4K format.

The 2018 Sony TV lineup is mostly represented by devices of the second type. Budget lines are rarely updated.

The next 2 numbers are the screen diagonal. The latest collection starts with a small diagonal – 31.5″ for Full HD models. The minimum diagonal for UHD TVs is 43 inches.

Device class

This is a key characteristic. For competitors, the most important parameter is the series. Sony TV is rated according to class. At the initiative of the brand, the model name is often shortened to a few characters. The first one denotes the device class.

This year, models of three classes appeared on the TV equipment market:

  • Z, X (S) – flagship models. The letter X denotes a flat screen, and S is used for curved models;
  • W – standard devices, mostly with Full HD screen resolution;
  • R – basic HD-ready devices.

Since last year, the letter A has been added to the existing symbols to mark OLED models.

Year of manufacture and series

The markings are updated according to the model year. It is denoted by the Latin letter:

  • F – 2018;
  • E – 2017;
  • D – 2016;
  • C – 2015.

After the year there is a number indicating the TV series (from 4 to 9). Then the model number is listed. These values, which are supplemented by the class, are included in the abbreviated marking: for example, ZD9. This means that we have a 9-series flagship with 4K support. Released in 2016.

The final marking element is design modification. The parameter is encrypted with one digit. However, this mark does not convey truly important information for a potential buyer.

The type of built-in TV tuner is not indicated in the basic labeling. Therefore, to find out how to set up the connection of digital channels, take a look at the technical specifications of the device.

New Sony TVs 2018

A review of new Sony TVs will allow potential buyers to finally make their choice. Consider OLED and UHD models. Let's analyze their strengths and weaknesses, as well as the cost of available devices.

OLED Series

Among the new TVs, the line of OLED models is predictably of the greatest interest. The 2018 Sony TV A1E is already on sale. The company offers 3 screen diagonals. The price and technical characteristics indicate that this is a flagship.

  • 55″ – $2800;
  • 65″ – $4000;
  • 77″ – $15,000.

Judging by user reviews, the new product from Sony made a positive impression even during the CES exhibition. A screen with intelligent backlighting, HDR support, maximum resolution – this is not a complete list of advantages. Consumers especially liked Acoustic Surface technology. There is no need to spend money on buying a speaker system. Built-in hardware with support for Dolby Digital Plus and DTS is enough for powerful and clear sound.

Sony Bravia A1 77″

The developers surprised even critics with their unconventional approach. However, they didn't like the placement of the subwoofer. It is located on the back of the stand. This decision was made by engineers to maintain the thinness of the screen. Therefore, the acoustics were moved outside the screen.

The design of the TV and the stand deserve special attention. The absence of frames makes the device sophisticated and original. The TV seems to float in the air. The developers moved the stand to the back; competitors still place it at the bottom. All control elements were hidden. They do not interfere with viewing.

UHD 4K Series

The manufacturer has updated not only expensive OLED devices, but also its line of Ultra HD 4K TVs. New models will be added to the premium class (X), and the following series will also be added: 7,8,9.

The choice of diagonals is wide. Prices correspond to the cost of analogues from Samsung and LG.

The new products presented in the table come with 4K support. They have an extended range. The most expensive models support all formats: HDR 10, Dolby Vision, HGL (still gaining momentum in popularity).

There is very little ultra-high quality content. Therefore, the developers have added a lot of proprietary functions, the activation of which will bring a regular image closer to 4K.

The main feature of the new collection of TV equipment is X-tended Dynamic Range Pro technology. The essence is a balanced distribution of brightness around the entire perimeter of the screen.

The X1 graphics processor will provide resolution scaling, as well as frame-by-frame image processing. The processor package has undergone changes. As a result, its power increased by 40%. TVs will operate smoothly, providing a comfortable viewing experience.

The largest premium TVs come with support for Smart TV based on the Android operating system. The manufacturer has worked thoroughly on the interface, navigation and control system. Voice control has been improved. Now the remote control is practically not used.

Gaming capabilities also did not go unnoticed. The basic package of 4K models includes original accessories for video games: joysticks, keyboards.

Sony KDL-55W805C

Already in the middle of this year, the Japanese brand announced the release of new TVs. The model range will be expanded in the near future. Official information about new products is published on the manufacturer’s website.

There is no point in reviewing absolutely all new models. After all, it will take a huge amount of time. Let's focus on the best TVs released this year.

Episode seven

This is a new level of TV with 4K support. The main feature is relatively low prices. The sales rating is very high. The choice of users is largely explained by the ratio of cost and functionality of the device. There is no support for the Android TV platform.

The new XF70 series is an updated version of the XE70. Now 4K has become more accessible, because TVs cost much less compared to their predecessors from last year.

Pay attention to this series. This includes models with screen sizes from 43 to 65 inches. These are the most popular sizes.

Even with a minimal budget, users can buy a device with impressive functionality. The XF70 series is equipped with a 4K X-Reality Pro GPU that supports DCE (Dynamic Contrast Contrast Technology).

Smart TV support. Access to popular streaming services has been implemented: Netflix, Prime Video, etc.

Episode Eight

Models in this series are middle class among TVs with 4K support. All devices have Android TV. The XF85 and XF80 also feature a frame made of aluminum. The basic package includes a special device for laying wires.

The X1 GPU is exclusively available in the XF85 series. These models do not have local dimming. Therefore, the level of HDR support is unsatisfactory.

Episode Nine

There are a lot of differences compared to the two previous series. A key feature is the introduction of proprietary X-Tended technology. The developers assure that both HDR and SDR content will be reproduced. Another innovation is X-Motion Clarity. This technology improves the image in dynamic scenes.

Direct LED backlight is used. It has local dimming. The ninth series is adapted for connecting an acoustic panel capable of reproducing sound in Dolby Atmos. TV models in this series are equipped with the X1 Extreme graphics processor.

Analyzing the expansion of the dynamic range, we note that all models in this series are produced with support for the following standards: HLG, HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

Flagships

To conclude the review of new products, we will highlight the flagships released in 2018 – the Sony AF8 series. We have already talked about it partially earlier. Therefore, let’s look at the flagships through the prism of differences from TVs of the ninth series:

  • OLED screen;
  • Acoustic Suface technology;
  • double database processing;
  • Super Bit Mapping option;
  • remastered.

The design of the flagships is in the style of minimalism. The TV will fit harmoniously into any room.

Note.

This year, Sony will focus on 4K, HDR (high dynamic range) and Android TV. More premium models will be offered, and HD models will not have Android TV support. All 4K TVs will include HDR support, but if you want optimal HDR, you'll need to look towards high-end TVs.

Review of the 2016 TV line

3D, like curved TVs, has never been a priority for Sony. For 2016, Sony only offers one curved TV. 3D remains in some models, but without development. And you can even say that the 2016 model is in many ways a continuation of the 2015. But some technology changes have occurred.

The first theme for Sony in 2016 is development of 4K technology for screens and HDR. Thanks to these parameters, the image rises to a new level, as Sony says.

We can say that the development of high dynamic range (HDR) technology plays a bigger role in this than 4K. With HDR, you can more accurately display high-contrast video scenes.

HDR content will begin to appear with the release of the first UHD Blu-Ray discs. Also on the Internet, some services offer streaming video in HDR quality. These are Amazon, Netflix and Vudu, but it is worth saying that there is still little HDR content. YouTube also plans to start broadcasting an HDR signal in 2016, but to receive it, your TV must have a VP9-PROFILE2 decoder.

Sony TVs will not support UHD Premium certification. According to the rules of the UHD Alliance, to obtain such a certificate, a TV must have a 4K resolution, a color gamut of 90% DCI-P3, HDR and a peak brightness of 1000 nits, and a black brightness level of 0.05 nits. Sony says its two high-end TVs will be able to meet these requirements, but the company will introduce its own "4K HDR" logo for them.

For a wide range of colors Sony uses its Triluminos backlight system. This means that the TV is able to display more colors than traditional devices. But you need to remember, in order to get the maximum result, the signal must comply with these technologies.

Another big theme for Sony in 2016 is Android TV operating system. Last year, Google's Android OS was introduced into Sony TVs.

Now this system is an integral part of Sony TVs. It is based on the functionality of Smart TV. Later this year, 2015 and 2016 TVs will be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Sony does not disclose all the technical parameters of the new models; it was only said that in 2016 a faster processor is used. The new remote control will come with all Android TVs. It features a large Netflix button.

The 2016 flagship models XD93 and XD94 this year come without special acoustics on the sides of the screen, as was the case last year. But there is one important difference between them. The XD94 features a Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) system that is capable of varying backlight brightness across multiple zones. With this backlight you get real HDR. The XD93 will use a special Edge LED backlight called the "Slim Backlight Drive". It uses two rows of LEDs and two diffusers. This allows you to increase the number of local dimming zones.

The class below would be the XD85 series. This is an edge-lit LED model with 4K resolution and support for HDR processing. There will be no real HDR here, only "processing" because these models cannot reach the same peak brightness as the XD94/XD93. S85C is similar to XD85 only with a curved screen.

The next WD7 series will have HD resolution and without Android TV. But there will still be some smart features. After the WD7 series there are also WD6 and Rd4.

Later this year, Sony may also add 4K models and show them at IFA. But now there are only these series. And the choice here is simple, choose the XD85 if you need a mid-range TV. Choose SD85 if you need the same device, but with a curved display. But if you want high-end images with true HDR, then go for either the XD93 or XD94 depending on the size. All 4K models will be equipped with a dual tuner. For 4K TVs, a speaker system with wireless connection will be supplied.

Sony TVs 2016 will be marked with the letter "D".

Sony is well known to users for its stylish design, excellent quality and excellent functionality of its equipment. This is what allows the Japanese brand to remain one of the most popular in any market segment where its products are presented year after year. Sony TVs are no exception, outperforming their competitors in both reliability and price/quality ratio. If you are just planning to buy a TV and don’t yet know which model to choose, then pay attention to our review. We reviewed only the best Sony TVs that offer excellent sound and good images.

The best compact 32-inch Sony TVs

Do you live in a studio apartment? Or maybe you need a small TV for the kitchen? In this case, the optimal solution would be models with a 31.5-inch screen. Considering the purpose of the TV, you can settle on a resolution of 1366x768 pixels. From a distance of 1.5-2 meters, the user will still not be able to see the pixel grid on the screen, and the money saved is better invested in other useful functions. As for sound, both models presented below are equipped with a pair of 5 W speakers and support Dolby Digital and DTS decoders. But satellite broadcasting is not supported by either of the two TVs, so keep this in mind before purchasing.

1. Sony KDL-32WD603

Let's start with the best Sony TV with a 32-inch screen - KDL-32WD603. This is a Smart TV model with CI+ support and a light sensor, which is a nice bonus with a price tag of 20 thousand rubles. In terms of the variety of inputs, the KDL-32WD603 is also very good for its level: two HDMI and USB, LAN, headphone jack, SCART and Wi-Fi. In addition to traditional functions for LED TVs, such as parental controls and auto-shutdown settings, the ability to record programs to external storage is available here, as well as the TimeShift option, which allows you to pause the broadcast (works if there is a drive in the USB port). The Sony KDL-32WD603 also includes DLNA support, thanks to which you can combine compatible devices into one network to access multimedia content stored on them.

Pros:

  • good set of ports;
  • interface for CAM modules;
  • convenient and fast OS;
  • light sensor.

2. Sony KDL-32RE303

The next cheap TV is represented by the KDL-32RE303 model. It could be called ideal, if not for the inflated price tag of 18 thousand rubles. Moreover, for this amount there is no OS, no DLNA support, or other useful functions. For this amount, competitors already offer Full HD resolution. However, Sony manages to beat everyone with an excellent image: a bright and rich picture, accurate color reproduction and Motionflow XR 100 Hz technology. The set of interfaces of the KDL-32RE303 is minimally sufficient and consists of a pair of HDMI, a headphone jack, AV and a USB port.

Advantages:

  • attractive design;
  • first-class image;
  • good sound;
  • convenient remote control.

Flaws:

  • the price is the same as that of TVs with Full HD resolution.
