When will iPhone 6 be released? History of the Apple iPhone line of smartphones

Apple will deprive four smartphones and two tablets of the new iOS update. The official release of iOS 13 will appear only in the fall, at the WWDC 2019 developer conference. The system will be presented in June.

Nothing is known for sure yet. However, one of the Apple developers told the French publication iPhoneSoft.fr that the iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6S will not receive the new version of the operating system.

The insider said that the iPad Mini 2 and iPad Air iPod will also be incompatible with the new operating system. Production of all these models has already been discontinued; only refurbished iPhone SEs appear at distributors from time to time.

The publication's source also said that the new version of the operating system will increase the speed of gadgets by 40%. The beta version will be shown on June 3, and the final version will be shown in mid-September. The large-scale installation of iOS 13 will likely begin in late September or early October.

If this information is confirmed in June, then the listed devices can be officially considered obsolete.

Users were surprised that the iPhone SE, which was released less than four years ago, will not receive new support, which is contrary to company policy. At the same time, the iPhone 6s model, whose characteristics are almost identical to the SE, will receive the iOS 13 update. Moreover, the iPhone 6s came out earlier.

The fact that the iPhone 5s was denied an update is not surprising. It went on sale in 2013.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launched in 2014 and were incredibly successful in terms of sales. But there is an opinion that the life cycle of these smartphones is initially a year less than that of the iPhone 5s.

Both tablets, iPad mini 2 and iPad Air, were released in 2013. The decision not to provide them with an update is not really surprising.
The situation with the iPhone SE, which was only three years old, was considered strange by users around the world. They suggested that Apple wants to completely abandon support for smartphones with a 4-inch screen. Therefore, I decided not to update it to iOS 13.
Users were not at all inspired by this news. They didn’t like the fact that one of the most beloved, affordable and convenient smartphones would finally disappear from sales. Perhaps it's not even because it's cheap compared to other Apple models.

“I know at least six different people who use the iPhone SE. When I asked them why they chose it, they all said that it is the best smartphone Apple has to offer. And no one said anything about its price,” a subscriber under the nickname EatinApplesauce wrote on Reddit.

They objected to him that the development of technology requires a larger format of gadgets to accommodate a camera, front speaker and FaceID sensor. And yet, most of the discussion participants agreed that even a small device could fit, albeit not all, new items.

“Users who want a small phone don't mind getting the latest innovations along with it. This means using the latest chips, technology and more. Of course, physical limitations play a role, but no one says that a small smartphone should have all the innovations,” KKM noted.

Many commentators agreed with him, confirming that it was a matter of convenience, and not the joy of owning the latest model.

“I want the latest model, but I demand a phone that can fit in my pocket. I bet that many people, especially those who do not carry a wallet, will agree with me,” said user Ibly1.

The editor-in-chief of the BigGeek.Ru portal Nikolai Nikolaev admitted that the iPhone SE was a fairly successful phone and sold well.

“And most importantly, it performed excellent functions and worked great. But since it is out of the new product line, it seems to me that it is a logical step to remove a phone with such a small screen, and try to focus on larger smartphones. Plus, this phone came at the right time, when there were still people wanting an Apple phone with a small screen. Now everyone is so accustomed, judging by what I know and available analytics, to smartphones with larger screen diagonals. Accordingly, the demand for models with small screens is dwindling,” he said in an interview with 360.

Nikolaev called the iPhone SE hardware “more or less suitable.” According to him, these phones are still available for free from distributors.

“And I think that within six months or a year we will see this phone on the shelves. Considering its cost, 20 thousand rubles or even less, it will still be sold,” Nikolai Nikolaev emphasized.

He suggested that the company is launching the iPhone 7 as an alternative smartphone.

“I think he will fill the vacated niche. It's more powerful than the iPhone SE and still meets the company's power requirements to run the latest operating system. The iPhone SE no longer responds to them, and in September, when the new iOS comes out, it will, of course, slow down,” summed up the editor-in-chief of BigGeek.Ru.

Leading analyst at Mobile Research Group Eldar Murtazin expressed the “360” opinion that the iPhone SE model was super successful due to its compact body.

“They sold a lot of them. Even last year it sold very, very successfully, including in Russia. We can say that refusing to support it is actually an attempt to push users to buy more modern models that the company has. Without offering a model of similar size, because the iPhone SE model was often bought precisely for its compactness, as a “dialer” and, to a lesser extent, as a smartphone,” the analyst said.

The reason for abandoning a completely successful model, in his opinion, is Apple’s big problems in the Russian market. Over the past year, the company has halved its share.

“Last year it was 16%, this year by the end of the first quarter it was 8%. I don't think they will fall any further, but nevertheless, in fact, we are saying that Apple has no other options. They will have to push their loyal audience to abandon old products and consciously shorten their life cycle. They have already been caught doing this when they slowed down their phones so that people would abandon them in favor of more productive models,” Murtazov recalled.

He believes that Apple does not have similar products that could compare in convenience to the SE.

“I think there is no alternative to the iPhone SE for one simple reason - this model is compact in design. That's why she is in demand. The iPhone SE was bought not only as a cheap iPhone, it was bought for its compactness. The iPhone SE won in this regard. “Seven” looks like just a relatively inexpensive model from Apple, which is not compact,” concluded Eldar Murtazov.

It's time to change things up, Apple?

The series of phones is represented by three excellent products, but by and large the changes are very conservative, a safe step from . As a result, all our hopes for a big update have now rested on the shoulders of the iPhone 12, and we are getting the first details about them.

Among other things, the possibility of 5G support, updated cameras, sophisticated design, increased screen refresh rates and much, much more are widely discussed. If all the rumors flooding the internet are confirmed at once, the iPhone 12 will be the radical update we've been waiting for for so long.

In this article, we collect all the data we receive regarding future Apple smartphones, including the release date and prices of the iPhone 12, here we will also provide a list of our editors’ wishes, and then see which of them Apple will “guess” in 2020.

Let's go!

  • What is this? New Apple smartphones;
  • When to expect? September, 2020;
  • What is the price? Absolutely not cheap;

IPHONE 12: RELEASE DATE AND PRICES

There have been no rumors regarding the release date of the iPhone 12 yet, but historically there has been a clear pattern of announcements of the company's new flagships, as Apple reveals its smartphones at the same time every year. This means that you can be sure that the iPhone 12 will be presented to the public in September 2020.

And that's not all, the new phones will hit the stage on Tuesday or Wednesday of the first (full) or second week of September, that is, September 8, 9, 15 and 16. Pre-orders will open on the Friday following the announcement, and a week later the phones will go on sale.

In terms of price, we expect a direct line-up with previous iPhone models. Let’s clarify: iPhone 11 retailed for $699 (45,000 rubles + VAT), iPhone 11 Pro cost the first customers $999 (65,000 rubles + VAT), and the most expensive iPhone 11 Pro Max started its pricing from $1,099 (72,000 rubles + VAT) and higher.

While discussing the price, we cannot miss one interesting report, according to which the cost of production materials for the iPhone 12 may increase, and the retail price will creep up behind it.

IPHONE 12: NEWS AND LEAKS

With the new iPhone 12, Apple could make dramatic design changes, starting with getting rid of the notch.

At least, this is what the company will do, according to analysts; in one of the upcoming models there should be no nicks on the screen, since the front camera promises us integration under the screen panel. If this is the case, an iteration of such technology should be implemented in the most expensive iPhone 12 model - most likely it will be the iPhone 12 Pro Max or something similar.

The integration of technology into the screen panel may not end with the camera, if rumors are to be believed that Apple is planning to integrate an in-display fingerprint scanner on its next smartphones.

Such a decision promises significant changes for the manufacturer, since the current generation of iPhone 11 has lost its fingerprint scanners. On the other hand, if the camera disappears behind the screen slab, it may well be that all the Face ID sensors simply won’t fit there. This means that a fingerprint scanner will replace Face ID, although we're not willing to bet on Apple taking such a radical step.

Some 2020 iPhone models can increase the refresh rate to 120 Hz versus 60 Hz on current models. According to rumors, and they come from a reputable source, increasing the refresh rate should make the user experience much more pleasant. Increasing refresh rates is nothing new for phones, even some iPads have smoother screens.

Screen sizes may change, according to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who reported that the iPhone 12 Pro Max could grow to 6.7 inches (vs. the iPhone 11 Pro Max's 6.5 inches), while the iPhone 12 Pro can get a 5.45-inch screen (iPhone 11 Pro – 5.8 inches).

The analyst adds that the classic iPhone 12 will obviously retain the 6.1-inch diagonal, instead the panel technology will change from LCD to OLED. This is not the first time we have heard promises of such an update, but in this case, all 2020 iPhones will switch to OLED panels.

Speaking of design, the situation is such that we may not limit ourselves to excluding the notch. Kuo says the changes will also include a frame that will be more similar to that of the iPhone 4, meaning it won't flex as much as current models. He also says that the new smartphones will "significantly" depart from the usual design.

Another major upgrade promises to be 5G, a new network format that has been rumored around the iPhone 12. Kuo also says that the entire trio of new smartphones could support 5G. We're confident that at least one smartphone will get 5G, given that this isn't the first source to mention a high-speed mobile network.

Camera updates will definitely come; we have already mentioned a 3D sensor with a laser depth gauge. A sensor is expected on the back, but only one source cites laser technology, others only promise us a depth gauge, so we'll see it in some form.

Finally, there is a good chance that Apple will reveal a fourth smartphone in its 2020 line of devices. Judging by the current trend, it will be a cheaper model, but the existence of this model seems very reliable.

IPHONE 12: WHAT DO WE WANT TO SEE?

iPhone 11 was a powerful yet safe iterative update for Apple. With iPhone 12, we're expecting big, flashy, and risky changes, some of which are outlined below.

NEW DESIGN

Most likely, like many other users, what we are most looking forward to from the iPhone 12 is a new design. Apple has been showcasing the same design for several years since updating the iPhone X.

Even though some changes were made to the design, the essence remained the same. Apple's design is frankly outdated. The main help is the large recess required by the manufacturer to install the camera module, including Face ID sensors. We would like to see further reduction of the excavation, perhaps with complete removal if possible.

But that's not all, we would like to see a fresh design. Otherwise, the performance of the iPhone 11 Pro is not bad at all, but at this stage it seems too familiar.

EDGE TO EDGE SCREEN

We would like to see the front of the iPhone 12 completely covered with a screen; one solution is to integrate the front camera under the display panel. If Apple is able to implement this solution well, the company will be able to impress the public.

And while we're debating the possibility of camera integration, we're longing for the return of the fingerprint scanner to help with login when Face ID is at its best. Needless to say, modern fingerprint scanners are integrated into the screen? If you believe the first rumors, this is exactly what Apple plans to do with the 12 iPhones.

HIGH UPDATE RATE

The solution with which some manufacturers continue to improve their smartphones is to increase the screen refresh rate relative to the classic 60 Hz. The OnePlus 7 Pro, for example, offered a 90Hz refresh rate, while the Razer Phone 2 gaming smartphone jumped to 120Hz.

All of these solutions will help make the overall user experience much softer and smoother, which is why we're expecting higher refresh rates with Apple's new phones. Nothing out of the ordinary, as some iPad Pro models offer 120Hz panels. And several rumors have already mentioned 120Hz as the iPhone 12 screen standard.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE BATTERY

For the first time in years, with the iPhone 11 phones, we noted that Apple has paid attention to the battery life of its devices, but we don't want the company to stop there. We are waiting for developments with iPhone 12.

We continue to hold out hope for an iPhone that can reliably last two days, and we'd like to see that with the iPhone 12 (or at least the iPhone 12 Pro Max).

5G SUPPORT

When it comes to 5G, Apple is losing the race as neither iPhone 11 offers the technology, while the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and OnePlus 7 Pro 5G already do.

Apple's passive approach to supporting 5G networks isn't a glaring problem since 5G coverage is extremely limited in most countries, but by the time the iPhone 12 comes out with networks spreading out and the number of phones supporting 5G growing, it's time for Apple to jump on the bandwagon.

Interestingly, some sources are already pointing to 5G support for 2020 iPhones.

PRICE DROP

Year after year, this is our constant wish for new iPhones, but this year we succeeded: the original iPhone 11 costs less than . Therefore, we wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhone 12 offered a further price reduction – or a reduction in the cost of another part of the 12-series range.

In fact, it's hard to expect anything like this, this is Apple, but Apple's budget smartphones have been the best-selling smartphones in recent years, so the manufacturer has a strong incentive to cut costs.

NEW FEATURES

Here we are talking about decisions that we are not able to predict. That is, features and technologies that are developed by Apple's brightest minds in the company's laboratories. The annual wait for an updated design and developed characteristics has become boring; they are no longer enough.

This happened 8 years ago. The world saw a smartphone that made a real revolution among gadgets, and to this day, an army of fans of Apple products are looking forward to the next iPhone models and new versions of iOS. Steve Jobs long ago hatched the idea of how to collect in one device everything that a modern person needs. This is an MP3 player, a digital notebook, a PDA, and a phone, of course. So first came the iPod touch, which was a great success, combining all multimedia functions except communications, and then the first . Over the past 8 years, 10 iPhone models have been released. How did they spread in Russia? Not to say that it was a triumphal procession, however...

First iPhone

When the 1st generation iPhone went on sale in the summer of 2007, queues lined up in America wanting to own a smartphone as soon as possible. In Russia, the first iPhone did not receive an official release and was distributed only as “”. By the way, today it can be purchased at auctions, since now it is a “rarity” and a living legend of Apple. Unopened boxes with smartphones are especially expensive.

iPhone 3G

The first smartphone in Russia from Apple was the iPhone 3G, which corrected some technical shortcomings and began supporting 3G communications for high-speed Internet connections, unlike its predecessor. The start of sales took place on the night of October 3, 2008 in the retail chains MTS, VimpelCom, Megafon and Svyaznoy. The fixed cost of the devices was stated: 22,999 rubles. (8 GB) and 26,999 rub. (16 GB). There were no queues or much excitement then. So, in the first 3 months, only 120-180 thousand smartphones were sold in the country, and these were unexpectedly low figures. Surely, the reason for this was the crisis that broke out in the summer of 2008, and those who wanted had already acquired an iPhone, exported from the USA, earlier. The iPhone 3G was equipped with a new version of iOS 2.0, GPS and A-GPS sensors synchronized with Google maps, the metal body was replaced with plastic (but in black and white variations).

iPhone 3GS

The next version was the iPhone 3GS, presented on June 8, 2009, but only reaching Russia on March 5, 2010 (although they were waiting for it back in August 2009). Negotiations with Apple over the pricing policy took a very long time, since official sales were disastrously low, distributors were in no hurry to invest in the next model. The re:Store and Z-Store networks were the first to start sales in Russia at prices of 30,000 rubles. for 8 GB and 35,000 rub. For 16 GB. iPhone 3GS updated the processor and iOS version to 3.0, the speed and performance increased 2 times (compared to the first two), a grease-repellent coating appeared on the display (now it is easy to clean from fingerprints and faces after a conversation), a music remote control on the headset , updated more capacious. Also for the first time, a voice control function was used, including support for the Russian language and a built-in compass with the ability to switch to maps for outdoor enthusiasts and tourists. But the appearance remained the same.

iPhone 4

Dmitry Medvedev, as President of the Russian Federation, on June 23, 2010 (3 weeks after the presentation and the day before official sales) became the first Russian to own an iPhone 4. He received it during a planned trip to the United States, visiting Apple's head office, directly from the hands of Steve Jobs. The smartphone went on general sale in Russia on September 22, 2010. It came in three variations of built-in memory: 8 GB for 26,990 rubles, 16 GB for 31,990 rubles. and 32 GB for RUB 36,990. The implementation was undertaken by 3 leading cellular operators.

With this modification, the smartphone began to work with any mobile operator, starting to support CDMA networks. Fans were pleased with the new design, a noticeable improvement in display parameters, a 5-megapixel camera with the ability to record HD video, an even more energy-intensive battery and a new personal data protection system (previously, the iPhone was not attractive to corporate clients due to low security, but the iPhone 4 fixed this ).

iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S was presented on October 4, 2011. The official release date in Russia was December 16 of the same year, with the right to sell from MTS and VimpelCom. Prices were again significantly higher than in Europe and the USA: 16 GB - 35,000 rubles, 32 GB - 40,000 and 64 GB - 45,000 rubles. Again, there was no excitement in Russia, because the smartphone could have been obtained faster and cheaper abroad, where it was released a couple of months earlier, which is what Apple fans did, once again ruining Russian sales.

Innovations in the model: a 2-core processor at 1 GHz and a new operating system iOS 5, RAM 512 MB, a new 8-megapixel camera with support for Full HD video, the voice assistant Siri, Bluetooth 4.0 and support for the GLONASS satellite system were introduced for the first time.

iPhone 5

The next presentation of the 6th generation of smartphones from Apple took place on September 12, 2012. iPhone 5 was released on September 21, Russia saw it on December 14, 2015. This was a more successful sales campaign, because shortly before the New Year, Russians are usually ready to spend large sums money for gifts. Prices were practically no different from 4S: RUR 34,990. for 16 GB, 39,990 rub. for 32 GB and 44,990 rub. for the 64 GB version.

The changes were as follows: another design update and a new firmware version iOS 6.0. The display has been increased to 4 inches, the dual-core processor is now 1.3 GHz, and the RAM is 1 GB. Support for 4G communications and support for nano-SIM and a new Lightning dock connector have been introduced, which is still used in all new devices from Apple. The smartphone also had problem areas: the display “deformed” from touch, distorting the picture, the sapphire glass on the camera glared, producing purple spots in the pictures, the new aluminum case was scratched, but overall, it was a fairly successful release, users considered the shortcomings to be insignificant.

iPhone 5c and iPhone 5S

Then Apple released a cheaper version of the iPhone 5c, which came with the new iOS 7 operating system, in a plastic, but colored (in five variations) case, but the characteristics were practically no different from the 5th. Presented on September 10, 2013, released in Russia on October 25: RUB 25,000. for 16 GB and 30,000 rub. for 32 GB. This budget version did not become popular with us. But on the same day, its more respectable brother, the iPhone 5S, was released, which, despite the lack of budget, was more successful. In terms of price, however, it also did not differ from previous models: 16 GB for 35,000 rubles, 32 GB for 40,000 rubles, 64 GB for 45,000 rubles.

iPhone 5s is made in an aluminum case in 2 colors: space, gray and gold, the processor has once again been updated, the rear camera has excellent technical characteristics, capable of recording video (slow-motion) 120 frames/sec. with a resolution of 1280/720 pixels and 30 fps at 1920-1080. The innovative ability to scan Touch ID fingerprints was added, which further increased the security of the smartphone (it’s not for nothing that S stands for Security in this model), and the Siri voice assistant finally came out of beta testing, learned new commands and even began to understand the Russian language.

Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Finally, the latest new products from Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were presented on September 9, 2014; they were officially released in Russia in December 2014 with prices that, due to the jump in the dollar exchange rate, really began to bite! Here's how much the flagships cost in December: iPhone 6 16 GB - 53,990 rubles, 64 GB - 61,990 rubles, 128 GB - 69,990 rubles; iPhone 6 Plus 16 GB — 61,990 rub., 64 GB — 69,990 rub., 128 GB — 77,990 rub. Even despite the cost, Russia has been waiting for the 6th iPhone; among their owners there are by no means only the middle class.

This is what the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus brought us: a new design, which caused controversy among aesthetes, in three color variations (gray, silver, gold), iOS8 was released with new software capabilities, unprecedentedly large displays (4.7 inches for iPhone 6 and 5 .5 inches for the iPhone 6 Plus) high-definition Retina Display HD, updated processor and coprocessor, improved rear camera parameters (including optical image stabilization), the ability to use the iPhone as a credit card through the Apple Pay system, added a barometer sensor, increased speed and LTE networks and so on. In short, equipped with the latest technology!

What can I say? Despite all the economic difficulties, crises, collapses in the ruble exchange rate, Apple in Russia and especially in Russia has loyal fans who will not exchange the iPhone for any other smartphone, and all because Apple is always ahead of the rest.

    Equipment - terrible

And if briefly? The package has only become worse compared to the iPhone X - the adapter from 3.5 mm to Lightning has disappeared. A high-power charging adapter is not included. Owners will have to purchase the necessary accessories for fast charging with their own money.

The iPhone XS comes in a traditional compact rectangular package. The box looks quite ordinary, but its contents have changed somewhat compared to last year's smartphones. The smartphone comes with EarPods with a Lightning connector, a USB/Lightning cable, a 5W charging adapter and documentation.

Noticed it missing? Yes, the kit does not include an adapter from the 3.5 mm connector to Lightning, which died a couple of years ago. This means that if you want to listen to music on your brand new smartphone using your favorite headphones with a 3.5 mm connector, you will have to first go to the store. And pay there 690 rubles for the adapter.

This particular feature of the configuration did not disappoint us much. There is another one that leaves a much more unpleasant aftertaste. A very expensive smartphone comes with a very ordinary 5W charging adapter. It will take almost two hours to charge your smartphone using such an adapter. There is no talk of any fast charging “out of the box”.

To be able to charge a smartphone faster, the new owner will need to run to the store again to buy a more powerful charger. Minimum spending - 1,590 rubles. For this money you can buy a 12 W iPad power adapter. Charging will become noticeably faster, but not as fast as possible.

For full-fledged fast charging, which allows you to charge your iPhone by 50% in 30 minutes, you will need to buy a 30 W USB-C adapter (3,590 rubles) and a USB-C cable (1,790 rubles). Thus, after purchasing a smartphone for a lot of money, the buyer needs to pay Apple another 5,000 rubles for accessories. This is not very pleasant.

On the other hand, Apple did the same last year when it released the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The smartphones also received support for fast charging, but the necessary accessories were not included. In other words, Apple should not be surprised at such a decision.

    Name

And if briefly? The new iPhone XS is correctly called “iPhone Ten S”. However, in Russia the name “iPhone Ten Es” has already taken root.

Before Apple's presentation, the company's new flagship was called differently. The names predicted for the smartphone were iPhone 11, iPhone XI, iPhone X 2, and even the very unlikely name iPhone Pro. The real name of the flagship was revealed a couple of weeks before the presentation. A major leak has indicated that Apple's new 5.8-inch smartphone will be called the iPhone XS. And so it happened.

With this name, Apple emphasized that the iPhone XS is an improved version of the iPhone X, and not a completely new generation model. However, like any previous iPhone with the “s” prefix, the iPhone XS received a lot of new features.

What should we call the iPhone XS? At the Apple presentation, company executives called the smartphone “iPhone Ten S” - this is the official name. People, of course, will call a smartphone differently. In Russia, for example, the name “X ES” may take root, since the original iPhone X was often called “X”.

    Design

And if briefly? The iPhone XS is still the same iPhone X in terms of design, there is not a single obvious change. The only major innovation is the new gold color of the case, which differs from the gold that Apple used in previous smartphones with greater depth.

In appearance, the iPhone XS is not much different from its predecessor, the iPhone X. The front and back surfaces of the smartphone are covered with a new generation of protective tempered glass. According to Apple, the glass is the most durable ever used in a smartphone. True, crash tests proved that glass continued to remain glass. If you drop your smartphone from arm's length onto a hard surface, the glass is likely to crack. As for collecting scratches, after several months of careful use without a case, no incidents occurred. There weren't even micro scratches on the case.

The glass is connected by a stainless steel frame. Note that some users complained that the frame would peel off over time. However, there were very few such reviews. And the frames of the iPhone X in our editorial office remained in perfect condition.

The shape of the body has not changed in principle. The body is slightly rounded at the corners, in the traditional style of Apple smartphones. Due to the minimal display frames, the body looks slightly elongated. But because of this, the dimensions are not huge. They are 143.6x70.9x7.7 mm. The figure is identical to the iPhone X.

Almost the entire front surface of the case is occupied by the display. There are minimal frames left on the sides and bottom. The top frame is much more noticeable, but is cut off on the sides. Yes, Apple has decided not to give up the “unibrow” yet.

The top end of the case is empty. On the right is the power button, on the left are the volume buttons and the sound mode switch. At the bottom end there are speaker grilles and a classic Lightning connector. Despite some rumors, the transition to USB-C did not take place.

The new iPhone XS is very similar to the iPhone X, but Apple still distinguished the model from its predecessor. The smartphone was released in three body colors (iPhone X came out in only two): silver, gray and brand new gold. The new gold color has not really been used by the company in any of the devices before. Compared to “regular” gold, the new color is much more saturated. Each color is applied to the body using a unique PVD coating method, which creates a glossy effect.

The experience of using the iPhone XS is no different from the iPhone X, of course, if you switch from one smartphone to another. A brand new smartphone ends up in your hand and no novelty is felt. And where would it come from if the design and even dimensions of the smartphones are identical. If you switch to the iPhone XS from earlier Apple smartphones, which are still made in the old design, then there will be a lot of emotions from the new product. You will also be surprised by the unusual gestures that allow you to control your smartphone without the Home button, the display on the entire front surface, and the glass back surface.

    Display

And if briefly? The smartphone has a 5.8-inch OLED display with the highest resolution, brightness and contrast. All the main characteristics of the iPhone XS screen are identical to the iPhone X, but there are a couple of important “tricks”. This is an immediate increase in the dynamic range of the display by 60%, due to which colors look brighter and more saturated, and support for content with a frame rate of 120 Hz.

iPhone XS features a full-screen 5.8-inch Super Retina HD OLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The display resolution is 1125x2436 pixels (pixel density per inch - 463 ppi). The iPhone X has a similar figure. This means that developers will not have to update their applications specifically for the smartphone.

The screen covers 81.4% of the front surface of the smartphone body. Apple managed to achieve this result by reducing the frames around the perimeter of the display.

The display brightness is 625 cd/m² - an excellent indicator for OLED displays. The image on the smartphone will be perfectly visible outside on a bright sunny day. The screen supports Apple's proprietary True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the display temperature depending on the light level. The display contrast is 1,000,000:1.

Despite numerous rumors, support for 3D Touch in the smartphone has not disappeared. iPhone XS recognizes pressure on the display, like previous models starting with iPhone 6s. Let us remind you that according to rumors, Apple intends to abandon 3D Touch technology in the future.

The display also supports HDR10 and DolbyVision. Support for the expanded P3 color format has also not gone away - it’s what makes the display so bright and saturated.

The screen is equipped with support for an advanced color management system, which works at the iOS level and displays any content in a wide color spectrum.

    Sound

And if briefly? It sounds VERY loud and rich. The stereo speakers of the smartphone are immediately 50% louder than in the iPhone X and the difference is really noticeable.

Apple engineers paid special attention to sound. The stereo speakers of the smartphone began to sound 50% louder compared to the iPhone X. The company specifically wanted to achieve this result, since support for Dolby Vision and HDR formats will allow owners to enjoy movies not only with a high-quality, rich picture, but also with surround sound.

    Characteristics

And if briefly? iPhone XS is the fastest smartphone in the world. It is equipped with the innovative six-core Apple A12 processor that performs any task instantly. And thanks to the second-generation Neural Engine machine learning module, the chip is constantly self-learning and improving the functions of both the iPhone XS itself and iOS 12.

The smartphone is based on a system based on the revolutionary Apple A12 Bionic processor. Its main feature is the technological process by which it is created. TSMC used the 7-nanometer FinFET process to create the A12 Bionic processor. For comparison, the iPhone X is powered by the A11 Bionic chip, which is made using a 10nm process technology.

iPhone XS became the first smartphone in the world equipped with a processor created using the 7nm process technology. Moreover, competitors will not soon catch up with Apple. Currently, only TSMC is capable of producing such processors - other companies have problems.

The A12 Bionic includes a six-core computing processor. Four chip cores are responsible for efficiency, the remaining two for performance. When iPhone XS performs a complex task, such as running a heavy game or application, the performance cores are activated at full capacity. They are also assisted by energy efficient cores. Thanks to this, even complex tasks are completed instantly.

But if the most common everyday tasks are performed on the smartphone, then exclusively energy-efficient cores work. Their power is enough to very quickly launch applications, move between them, etc. without spending a lot of energy. This system allows you to spend significantly less resources. Up to 50% less than iPhone X.

The system on the A12 Bionic chip integrates a quad-core graphics processor, which was also developed by Apple. Its key feature is support for lossless data compression technology. It opens up completely new possibilities for both users and developers.

The third important component of the system on the A12 Bionic chip is the second generation Neural Engine machine learning module. It is capable (and constantly does so) of executing five trillion commands per second. This phenomenal performance allows the A12 Bionic processor to self-learn much faster. What this all means for the user is that iOS 12 features that use machine learning data perform better. For example, the search for photos in the Photos app begins even before a person enters a query.

What does the new A12 Bionic processor, made using completely new technology, give? Productive power! iPhone XS is the fastest smartphone in history. It took over this title from its predecessor, the iPhone X, and immediately moved ahead.

The smartphone is up to 70% faster than the iPhone X thanks to the new processor. Increased productivity is evident in literally everything. It opens apps and games faster, performs complex operations, encodes videos, etc. The difference in operating speed is visible to the naked eye. It is noteworthy that the iPhone X felt like a perfectly fast smartphone. However, Apple has clearly proven that the iPhone can be even faster.

In synthetic tests, the iPhone XS easily outperformed the previous leader, the iPhone X. In single-core testing mode, the difference was not the greatest - 4835 points versus 4320. The flagships of other companies were significantly inferior.

The iPhone XS performed even more confidently in testing in multi-core mode. The six-core A12 Bionic processor left no chance for any other smartphone, including the iPhone X.

At the same time, the A12 Bionic processor is more energy efficient. It uses less energy, allowing your iPhone to run longer without needing to be recharged.

The amount of RAM has also increased. If the iPhone X had 3 GB, then the iPhone XS already has 4 GB. The increased amount of RAM will allow the smartphone to hold more applications in memory and perform much more demanding tasks.

    Built-in memory

iPhone XS has 64, 256 or 512 GB of internal memory. Previously, no Apple smartphone was equipped with 512 GB of internal memory; the maximum was 256 GB in the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. Thus, the smartphone has doubled the maximum amount of internal memory.

    Face ID

And if briefly? The Face ID facial recognition feature in the iPhone XS has become even better. The function itself has not received significant improvements, but due to improvements to the Secure Enclave security module, face detection for users is noticeably faster.

Thanks to the fast A12 Bionic chip, Face ID has also accelerated. It identifies the user and unlocks the smartphone much faster. Also, the speed of Face ID was affected by the accelerated Secure Enclave security module. It began to quickly compare the saved map of the user’s face with the person’s face itself. The speed of recognition, and at the same time unlocking an iPhone or confirming a purchase, has increased. It is important to note that the iPhone XS still does not have Face ID 2.0. The face scanner, like in the original iPhone X, creates a map of the user's face by projecting 30,000 points onto it.

The feeling of using Face ID is ambiguous due to the fact that in the iPhone X there was no dissatisfaction with the speed of the face recognition function. Improvements could only be tracked through a direct comparison of Face ID in both smartphones. The smartphone reacts a little earlier, but the difference cannot be called striking. As for stability, it’s completely fine after the first few days of active use. Face ID detects your face while standing, sitting, lying down, in the dark, at an angle, and in whatever way you like.

The only thing that the Face ID function has not learned is how to work in landscape orientation. We are waiting for such an innovation in the next generation iPhone.

    Battery and charging

And if briefly? iPhone XS is a real long-liver. The smartphone can easily last 23 hours in talk mode, and can easily work for two days in everyday mode.

iPhone XS is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2658 mAh. The L-shaped battery consists of two cells connected together. Apple first used such a solution in the iPhone X and, apparently, it will be implemented in the company’s smartphones in the future.

Battery life has increased by 30 minutes compared to iPhone X. This means that the smartphone has up to 20 hours of talk time.

The smartphone supports fast charging. Using a powerful power adapter, you can charge your smartphone up to 50% in just 30 minutes. The model also supports wireless charging, the speed of which has increased significantly compared to the iPhone X.

    Water protection

And if briefly? iPhone XS is not afraid of water. You can throw a smartphone to a depth of up to two meters and keep it there for 30 minutes - nothing will happen to it. And these are only the officially declared characteristics. In fact, and this has been confirmed by testing, the iPhone XS can easily withstand immersion to much greater depths.

Few people expected this, but Apple has increased the degree of protection against water and dust. The latest Apple smartphone is protected from dust and moisture according to the IP68 standard. This means that dust, in principle, cannot get under the device’s body, and the smartphone can easily survive under water for 30 minutes (at a depth of up to two meters). Previous water-resistant iPhone models were rated IP67.

It is important to note that these are the stated specifications only. In fact, a smartphone can stay at greater depths without threat to its life. Of course, few would think of subjecting an iPhone to such tests on purpose. But future owners should know that if their smartphone suddenly falls to great depths in a river or sea, then even if the depth exceeds two meters, nothing will happen to it.

iPhone XS is protected not only from water, but also from various other liquids. Nothing will happen to your smartphone even after immersion in milk, juice or beer.

    Cameras

And if briefly? The iPhone XS's dual-camera specs seem deceptive at first glance, as they are simply no different from the iPhone X's camera. But Apple has made some very important improvements to the new smartphone's camera. Deeper pixels, a new image processor and support for the unique Smart HDR mode enable iPhone XS to take phenomenally high-quality photos.

The main camera is quite familiar from the iPhone X - double, located vertically and protruding quite well from the body. The camera resolution is 12 megapixels. The aperture of the wide-angle lens is f/1.8 and the telephoto lens is f/2.4. The camera supports 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. Both modules support optical image stabilization.

Did you notice? All the main camera characteristics are the same as the iPhone X. But important additional characteristics that Apple does not describe directly in the specifications have been improved. First of all, the pixels have increased, the size of which is 1.4 microns (versus 1.2 microns in the iPhone X). This figure is far from a record. Many much cheaper smartphones had cameras with deeper pixels two years ago. However, the increased pixel size helped improve shooting quality noticeably.

The second major improvement is the support for the smartphone camera by the new image processor, which is built into the A12 Bionic chip. The specific characteristics of this processor are unknown, but Apple assures that thanks to it, the overall quality of shooting is also significantly improved.

The camera's key software improvement comes in Portrait mode, which lets you take photos with a depth-of-field effect. The bokeh effect created when shooting in Portrait mode has been improved. Both the background and the subject began to be determined noticeably more accurately, due to which the overall quality also increased.

The “Portrait” mode now has support for a new feature called “Depth”. It makes it possible to adjust the depth of field in portrait photography after shooting. To do this, you just need to go to the Camera application and twist the slider.

In addition, the camera received support for the new Smart HDR mode. Like regular HDR, its “smart” version brings out details in the darkest and lightest areas of the image. But Smart HDR does it in a special way, using the full power of the new signal processor. As a result, the manifestation of details is much more noticeable. And here it is worth noting that Apple was not the first to create such a function. For the first time, Google used such a solution in the Pixel smartphone.

The iPhone XS can also shoot video with stereo sound. Since the smartphone itself has stereo speakers, you can fully view and listen to such videos directly on your iPhone.

Examples of photos on iPhone XS

    Daytime photography on iPhone XS

Highest detail, even when the lighting is not ideal.

The iPhone XS's camera is definitely the best at capturing detail on any Apple smartphone.

And another example of the ability of the iPhone XS camera to capture details in the most distant shots.

When shooting against the sun, the frame does not lose detail.

A striking example of the fact that Apple decided to stick to its tradition in the iPhone XS and not “tint” the colors in the photo. The color rendition is made as realistic as possible, as we actually see. The iPhone camera does not apply any filters by default.

In the photo below, the “correctness” of the camera’s color rendering is proven once again. Notice that the bright objects in the background are rendered as truly bright as they are. “Coloring” the entire photo does not happen. Yes, for some this may seem like a minus.

Capturing moving objects on camera is a pleasure. No blur or any other defects.

Portrait mode has been improved, but in most cases you won't be able to see a clear difference from the iPhone X. Both smartphones take great photos with bokeh effects. And not just excellent, perhaps the best among smartphones.

    Night photography

However, there is still room for improvement when it comes to night photography on the iPhone. In the bottom photo you can see the obvious noise reduction work in the sky and in distant parts of the frame. However, in this particular case, the excellent detail of the main object stands out.

Night photographs turn out great, especially if you “catch” on any illuminated objects.

However, even if you don’t shoot a specific light source, you get quite excellent pictures.

    Video examples

    Example of daytime shooting

During the day you will be able to shoot amazing videos with the highest detail and honest color reproduction.

    Example of night shooting

The camera allows you to shoot great videos even in low light conditions. Please note that due to the lack of lighting in the videos below, the overall image does not suffer and no obvious flaws are visible.

    Front-camera

And if briefly? The front-facing iPhone XS supports Smart HDR mode and the new Depth function, and also has improved stabilization when shooting video.

The front camera has a resolution of 7 megapixels and an f/2.2 aperture. The key features of the front camera are the “Portrait” mode for taking selfies with a depth of field effect and support for various portrait lighting effects. Portrait mode for the front camera received identical improvements as for the main camera: improved bokeh effect and the “Depth” function. The front camera also features a new advanced video stabilization feature.

    iPhone XS price in Russia

iPhone XS is sold in Russia at the following prices ( found the most profitable ones):

    • iPhone XS 64 GB - 55,990 rubles.
    • iPhone XS 256 GB - 69,990 rubles .
    • iPhone XS 512 GB - 69,990 rubles .

    Grade

We decided to give the iPhone XS two ratings at once. The first is an assessment “in a vacuum”. iPhone XS is the best Apple smartphone on the market. Moreover, the new product can easily be called the best smartphone in principle. It has an amazing display, unmatched performance, amazing cameras, long battery life and many other great features. As a standalone smartphone, we give the iPhone XS a solid 10 out of 10.

But if you look back at the iPhone X, the iPhone XS is less impressive. The new Apple smartphone is undoubtedly better in all respects, but there are no truly innovative technologies used in the smartphone. The iPhone XS is a typical Apple smartphone with the “S” prefix. It's good, but too similar to the previous generation model. And what is important, it is similar not only in appearance or set of functions, but also in the feel of use.

Taking this into account, the second rating of the iPhone XS, as the successor to the iPhone X, will be lower - 7.5/10.

The passions over the new iPhone 5S and the “cheap” iPhone 5C have not yet subsided, but many are concerned about the question: when will the next model of Apple smartphone appear, and what will it be? Some people expected this to happen this year, but it did not happen. Therefore, the release date of the iPhone 6 is postponed until 2014, in the same year it will officially appear in Russia.

You can check out the latest iPhone 6 rumors here.

It should be said that Apple's actions have become more predictable. As we expected, two models were announced: the flagship 5S and the budget iPhone 5C (in multi-colored cases); iPhone 5S now has a fingerprint scanner and dual flash.

So, the iPhone 6 release date is 2014

It's hard not to notice that the story with iPhone models is developing in a spiral. It is this fact that allows us to more or less accurately predict when the next iPhone model will appear.

Let's look at the history of Apple's handset lineup:

    • First generation iPhone - June 2007
    • iPhone 3G - July 2008
    • iPhone 3GS - June 2009
    • iPhone 4 - June 2010
    • iPhone 4S - October 2011
    • iPhone 5 - September 2012
    • iPhone 5s/5c - September 2013.

While simple logic tells us that the next model will be called iPhone 6, historical analysis gives a date of September/October 2014. True, Apple may shake things up a little and show the world the iPhone 6 before this date. This has already happened once, remember the iPad 4, which appeared eight months after the launch of the previous model, instead of the expected period of one year. But still, I think that you should save up money for a brand new iPhone by September 2014.

    What's new in iPhone 6

So far, rumors about the characteristics of the iPhone 6 are very vague. But we can name five features that Apple is distancing itself from for now. Surely, she is thinking about building her next marketing steps on them.

NFC. Mobile users have long wanted NFC support in the iPhone. This technology offers many benefits, including mobile payments.

Enlarged screen. Maybe we will see not an iPhone, but an iPablet? Apple still has growth potential. In the next smartphone model we can see a diagonal of 5-6 inches. Apple has smartphones and tablets with different screens. And at the same time it did not suffer from fragmentation. The i-Phablet will certainly strengthen Apple's position in the world of mobile technology.

Increased memory capacity. On the iPhone 6 release date, we want to hear something about 128GB. Although Apple has a neat pricing system based on internal storage capacity, it can't keep sending memory-hungry users to iCloud forever. For many manufacturers, expanding the memory capacity is a popular move that customers fall for. Another good solution would be the appearance of a slot for memory cards. This would expand the ranks of fans of Apple handsets. I'm pretty sure this will happen. Although…

Wireless charger. It's very Apple-esque, and we're disappointed we haven't seen it yet. Apple's main competitor, Samsung, has already implemented this feature for its smartphones. I don't think Apple can afford to lag behind on this front.

Flexible screen. “This is nonsense!” the reader will say. Not at all. Samsung fans are already making noise about the appearance of handsets with flexible screens next year. If this works, Apple won't have to wait long to show off a similar solution. You know,
