How to roll back the BIOS to factory settings. Instructions for returning a laptop to factory settings

Good afternoon.

Many problems on a laptop can be solved if you reset the BIOS settings to factory settings (sometimes they are also called optimal or safe).

In general, this is done quite easily, it will be more difficult if you set a password on the BIOS and when you turn on the laptop it will ask for this same password. Here you can’t do without disassembling the laptop...

In this article I wanted to look at both options.

1. Reset laptop BIOS settings to factory settings

To enter the BIOS settings, the keys are usually used F2 or Delete(sometimes F10 key). It depends on the model of your laptop.

Finding out which button to press is quite easy: reboot the laptop (or turn it on) and look at the first welcome window (it always indicates a button to enter the Bios settings). You can also use the documentation that came with the laptop upon purchase.

And so, we will assume that you have entered the Bios settings. Next we are interested in Exit tab. By the way, in laptops of different brands (ASUS, ACER, HP, SAMSUNG, LENOVO) the names of the Bios sections are almost the same, so there is no point in taking screenshots for each model...

Next, in the Exit section, select a line like “ Load Setup Defaults"(i.e. loading default settings (or default settings)). You will then need to confirm in a pop-up window that you want to reset your settings.

And all that remains is to exit the BIOS while saving the settings made: select Exit Saving Changes(first line, see screenshot below).

By the way, in 99% of cases with the settings reset, the laptop will boot normally. But sometimes a small error occurs and the laptop cannot find where to boot from (i.e. from what device: flash drive, HDD, etc.).

To fix it, go to Bios again and go to the section Boot .

Here you need to change the tab Boot Mode :UEFI change to Legacy, then exit the Bios saving the settings. After rebooting, the laptop should boot normally from the hard drive.

2. How to reset BIOS settings if it requires a password?

Now let's imagine a more serious situation: it so happened that you set a password for the Bios, and now you have forgotten it (or your sister, brother, friend has set a password and is calling you for help...).

Turn on your laptop (in the example, an ACER laptop) and see the following.

ACER. The BIOS asks you to enter a password to use the laptop.

To all brute force attempts, the laptop responds with an error and after several incorrect passwords are entered, it simply turns off...

In this case, you cannot do without removing the back cover of the laptop.

You only need to do three things:

  • disconnect the laptop from all devices and generally remove all cords that are connected to it (headphones, power cord, mouse, etc.);
  • remove the battery;
  • remove the cover protecting the RAM and hard drive of the laptop (the design of all laptops is different, sometimes you may need to remove the back cover completely).

There are two contacts under the RAM strips (they are also signed JCMOS) - these are what we need. Now do the following:

  • close these contacts with a screwdriver (and do not open them until you turn off the laptop. This requires patience and accuracy);
  • connect the power cord to the laptop;
  • turn on the laptop and wait about a second. 20-30;
  • turn off the laptop.

Now you can connect the RAM, hard drive and battery.

Contacts that need to be closed to reset the BIOS settings. Usually these contacts are labeled with the word CMOS.

We need to say a few words about the “pitfalls”:

  • not all laptops will have two contacts, some will have three, and to reset you need to move the jumper from one position to another and wait a few minutes;
  • instead of jumpers there may be a zero button: just press it with a pencil or pen and wait a few seconds;
  • You can also reset the Bios if you remove the battery from the laptop motherboard for a while (the battery looks like a small tablet).

In this article we will show several ways to restore the BIOS settings to default, or, as experts say, “reset the BIOS to defaults.” Reset can be useful to you in a variety of situations. For example, if you changed something in the BIOS settings and the computer began to not work as it should. Or the PC completely stopped turning on, showing a black screen, after trying to overclock the processor, memory or bus.

How to reset/restore BIOS settings

If your computer boots and allows you to enter the BIOS, then restoring the default settings is easy: to do this, you need to enter the BIOS, select LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS or LOAD FAIL-SAFE DEFAULTS:

and then select SAVE AND EXIT SETUP and, if prompted for confirmation, select Y (yes):

After this, the system will reboot and ALL BIOS settings will be restored to their original (factory) settings.

If your computer does not start and it is not possible to enter the BIOS, you need to reset the BIOS by hardware.

This situation can arise after setting incorrect values ​​for critical system parameters: processor frequency, system bus, RAM timings and some others. Most often, the system does not start after an inexperienced user tried to overclock the system incorrectly :)

So, hard reset BIOS:

  1. Turn off the computer
  2. Removing the cover of the system unit
  3. We are looking for CLR_CMOS contacts on the motherboard. They look like three needles, two of which are connected by a jumper, and are usually located near the BIOS battery.
  4. We remove the jumper and install it on other contacts so that the middle contact now closes with the other contact.
  5. Turn on the computer

If after this procedure the computer still does not start, try taking additional steps:

  1. Turn off your computer.
  2. Disconnect the 220 V power cord from the back of the system unit.
  3. With the 220 V power cable disconnected, press the power button on the system unit. This is necessary to completely discharge the capacitors.
  4. Take out the BIOS battery (battery type is CR2032) and insert it with the other side, i.e. "wrong".
  5. Wait about 10 seconds, then remove the battery again and insert it the correct way around. Turn on your computer.

If after this the computer still does not start, try replacing the CR2032 battery

BIOS (Basic input/output system) – basic computer input/output settings. The operation of the processor, RAM, boot priority, time and date is configured through the BIOS. Sometimes, if errors occur when loading your computer, resetting or restoring the settings to factory settings can help. In this article we will try to describe the possible options for resetting the bios to factory settings.

Reset Bios to factory settings

There are several options to reset Bios settings to factory settings:

  • Through BIOS parameters (software);
  • Via jumper or CMOS reset (hardware).

Let's look at these options separately.

Option 1

Through BIOS settings. This method will allow you to simply and quickly reset the settings via uefi bios to factory settings. It eliminates direct access to the computer hardware and is perfect if the operating system does not load. Difficulties may arise for users who may not be well versed in English names or words.

Procedure:

  • Restart your computer;
  • When rebooting, press the key that brings up the BIOS. The required key may be indicated on the boot screen, accompanied by the designation Setup. Depending on the manufacturer of the laptop or motherboard, the keys may be Esc, Del, F2, F8, F12
  • Go to the Settings or Exit tab. In this tab you need to find the following items:
    - Load Default Settings;
    - Load Default;
    - Load Setup Default;
    - Or other similar combinations.
  • Exit settings, saving your current changes.

Option 2

Using a jumper. This option will be ideal if you need to reset the bios settings to default settings, but you cannot access it due to an error or failure. This jumper is present on every motherboard - personal computer or laptop.


Procedure:

  • Turn off your computer;
  • On the motherboard, find a jumper with the following designations
    - CLEAR CMOS;
    - CLEAR;
    - CLR CMOS;
    - CLR PWD.

If the jumper has 2 contacts, open it (remove the jumper) for a few minutes and connect it back. If there are 3 contacts, connect the jumper in an alternative way (for example, from position 1-2 to position 2-3).

  • On a laptop: remove the RAM sticks. Under them, find 2 contacts labeled CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS and others. These pins must be closed to reset the CMOS.

Warning! Not all laptops have these contacts; the following option is suitable for them.

Option 3

By removing the CMOS battery. This method is the most difficult/inconvenient when using a laptop, but sometimes it is the only one, since the manufacturer did not offer other options. This method will help solve the question of how to reset the bios settings on a laptop (HP, Asus, Lenovo, Acer and others) to the preset value.

Procedure:

  • Turn off your computer;
  • Turn off the power to the device (remove the laptop battery or disconnect the network cable from the system unit's power supply) and remove the computer cover.

Necessarily! Make sure there is no static current or use special antistatic materials.

  • For computer. There is a small round CR2032 battery on the motherboard. This battery supports dynamic memory (CMOS) power so you don't have to reconfigure all hardware and boot settings every time you shut down or restart your computer. It must be removed for 2-3 minutes and reconnected.
  • For laptop. Remove the laptop cover until you reach the small battery. It differs slightly from a “computer battery”, in that there are 2 wires coming from it, these contacts are connected to the motherboard to maintain CMOS functionality. Disconnect the contacts for 2-3 minutes and reconnect.
  • Assemble your system unit or laptop, connect it to power and turn it on.

Resetting parameters to factory settings is not always difficult and unclear; it is enough to have the appropriate instructions at hand.

Those who like to tinker with the BIOS settings sometimes encounter situations where something doesn’t work right. For example, if you set incorrect parameters in the settings or update the BIOS incorrectly, the correct operation of the computer will be disrupted. This can manifest itself in unstable operation of the system or even its complete failure (the computer simply will not turn on). And resetting the settings in the BIOS will be the only option in this case. And to reset all BIOS settings to factory settings, you need to know how to reset the BIOS.

A little about BIOS

BIOS (Basic Input-Output System) is a basic input-output system, or simply put, a program that is stored in
ROM (read-only memory) chip and launches and configures all equipment even before loading the operating system. BIOS is located on the motherboard and is the code responsible for the operation of all devices in the computer (or laptop). The better this code is, the faster the computer will work. All basic hardware parameters are stored here. Although some parameters are set during the installation of the operating system. When you turn on the computer, the BIOS tests all devices for functionality within a few seconds and, if everything is normal, transfers control to another program that is already loading the operating system. In the BIOS you can change many settings, including overclocking the processor or video card. In fact, unsuccessful overclocking of a video card or processor may be the very reason why you need to reset the BIOS settings.

It's quite simple to do. To do this, you will need to restart the computer (or turn it on if it was turned off before), and as soon as the first inscriptions appear, you must press the key. Which one exactly depends on the model of the installed motherboard. Most often these are the “Del”, “F2” or “F10” buttons. You can find out which key activates the BIOS call when the computer boots at the bottom of the screen (before the OS loads).

As a rule, calling the BIOS may be necessary in case (this is one of the reasons). To install everything correctly, you need to completely wipe the hard drive, and this can only be done through the BIOS.

Why reset BIOS settings?

There can be many reasons why you need to reset the BIOS settings. For example, the user was too overzealous with tuning the computer's performance. Namely: overclocked the processor or video card to critical levels. For security reasons, the computer now does not want to turn on. It informs the user that the device temperature is too high and turns off. Of course, some models can automatically restore factory settings, but this is not always the case. Most often, the user has to perform this procedure independently.

Another reason why you have to think about resetting the BIOS is an unsuccessful update. If by mistake (or out of ignorance) it was not suitable for the motherboard or BIOS version, then the computer will begin to “fever”. This situation can only be corrected by resetting the BIOS.

A fairly common reason for resetting the BIOS is also resetting the password. That is, if when you turn on the computer, the system asks for a password, and the new owner of the computer, of course, does not know it, then you have to reset the settings in the BIOS.

Other reasons may be:

  • the computer does not respond to pressing the power button (does not turn on);
  • the computer turns on, but makes some sounds and does not load the operating system;
  • The computer constantly freezes, reboots, etc.

How to reset BIOS settings?

There are 3 ways to restore BIOS settings to default:

  • from the BIOS menu;
  • using a jumper;
  • using a battery.

Laptop owners should take into account one fact: in order to reset the BIOS using the last 2 methods, you will need to disassemble the laptop, i.e. you will lose the warranty on it (if it is still valid). To solve this problem, it is better to contact specialists at the service center.

So, the first method is to restore the default settings from the BIOS menu. First you need to go into the BIOS. This can be done using the “Del”, “F1”, “F2”, “F10” buttons (depending on the motherboard model). If you cannot enter the BIOS due to a set password or various errors, then this option is not suitable for you.

You can reset the BIOS settings to factory settings from the BIOS Setup exit menu - the desired parameter is called “Load Optimal Defaults”

Then you need to find the option to restore default settings. The position and name of this option may vary depending on the motherboard model. Most often this item is called “Reset to Default”, “Factory Default”, “Setup Defaults” or something like that. This item can be located either in one of the tabs or next to the navigation buttons. You must select this option and confirm that you really want to reset all settings to default. If for some reason you do not have this item (or you did not find it), then you can use another method.

After this you need to save the changes. When exiting the BIOS, the system will ask if you need to save the changes. After confirmation, the computer will restart automatically. If you need to set certain settings, you need to go into the BIOS again, make all the necessary changes and restart the computer again.

Method two is to reset the BIOS using a jumper. First, you need to turn off the computer using the corresponding button in the operating system. Then you need to find the switch on the back panel of the system unit (if there is one) and switch it to the “O” (off) position. If there is no such switch, then you just need to unplug the computer from the outlet.

After this, you need to open the case of the system unit. The goal is to get to the motherboard. You need to be very careful when working with computer components, especially avoiding electrostatic discharge, as it can damage some parts of the computer. It is advisable to ground yourself before touching the components.

Next you need to find a 3-pin jumper on the motherboard, usually located next to the CMOS battery. The jumper will be installed on 2 pins (there are 3 in total). It may be labeled CLR, Clear, Clear CMOS, etc. It is advisable to look through the documentation for the motherboard to make it easier to find the jumper.

Then you need to move this jumper to the other 2 pins. For example, if it was on the 1st and 2nd pins, now you need to move it to the 2nd and 3rd. To avoid damaging the pins, you need to pull out the jumper in a vertical position.

After this, you need to press and hold the computer's power button for about 10-15 seconds. Since the computer is turned off, nothing should happen. This will discharge the remaining voltage on the capacitors and reset the BIOS settings. Next, you need to return the jumper to its original position, and then close the system unit case.

Now you can plug in your computer and press the power button. If necessary, you can go into the BIOS to change the settings.

The last method is to restore the BIOS settings to default using a CMOS battery. You need to turn off the computer again, switch the switch to the “O” (off) position and unplug the cord from the outlet. Then you need to open the case of the system unit; to work you will need access to the motherboard. You can get to the battery on your laptop by opening the panel on the bottom of the laptop. If there is no such panel, then you will have to get to the battery using special tools.

After this, you need to remove the battery. It can be located in different places (depending on the motherboard), but most often it is located near the PCI inputs. Next, you need to reset the BIOS by holding the power button for 10-15 seconds. Then you need to install the battery, close the case and connect the computer to the outlet.

These are the ways you can reset the BIOS. If such manipulations are quite difficult for you, it is better to use the services of a service center.
