What to do if the computer turns on but the monitor does not. LG monitor does not turn on - what to do

Monitor does not turn on when you start your computer? Or the image on the monitor disappears, but the computer continues to work? Also, some users complain that the computer works, but after a while the screen goes blank and the message “No signal” or “Cable not connected” appears.

There are many different reasons why your monitor may not turn on when you start your computer or may turn off while it is running. Most often, this problem is related to hardware, be it a video card, cables, monitor, RAM or motherboard. However, sometimes the problem with “no signal on the monitor, but the computer works” can be a software issue.

We'll cover easier solutions to this problem first, because in the worst case scenario, you'll have to replace one of your computer parts or even your monitor.

Method 1 - Check Power

You've probably already checked the power cable to your monitor, but we have to remind you about it. If your monitor is not displaying an image and your computer is running, make sure your monitor is turned on. Typically, monitors have a power indicator light when they are turned on.

If your monitor is on but there is no picture, try pressing the menu button to open the monitor's built-in controls. If even the settings menu does not open, the problem is probably with the monitor because even if there is no connection, you can open the monitor menu. Try connecting a different monitor to your computer if you have one.

Now you need to make sure that the computer is working properly. When you turn on your computer, you should look for warning lights or sounds. If the power button or one of the status lights is red or orange, or if the computer beeps multiple times when you turn on, there is a problem with the computer.

The beeps may be related to the motherboard, video card, etc. You need to contact a service center, or search on the Internet, what the beeps or status indicators on your computer mean.

If a monitor is connected, the computer turns on, but the monitor still does not show an image, the computer may have entered standby or hibernation mode. Try pressing any keys on the keyboard or moving the mouse. If this doesn't work, try restarting your computer by pressing the power button.

Method 2 - Check cables

Also, the reason why the image on the monitor disappears, but the computer works, may be due to cables. Whether you use VGA, DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort to connect your computer to your monitor, any of them can become disconnected. This happens especially often with cables that do not screw into the back of the monitor.

Make sure the cable from the computer to the monitor is connected correctly.

If you have a dedicated graphics card, make sure the monitor is connected to the graphics card and not to the motherboard's video connector. By default, Windows should automatically disable motherboard graphics when you have a separate graphics card, but sometimes it doesn't.

If you end up connecting your monitor to the motherboard, it may work for a bit, but then suddenly go dark. Restarting the computer may solve the problem, but it will still happen again. If you have two monitors, and one of them you connect to the video card, and the other to the motherboard, and one monitor shows the image and the other does not, then you know the reason.

If you are only connecting one monitor, then you need to rule out the possibility of a cable failure. To do this, you will need to find another monitor to connect to your computer. If it works, your monitor cable may be damaged and needs to be replaced.

Try replacing the video cable or using a different video cable if you have multiple connection options such as DVI, HDMI, etc.

Method 3 - Check Resolution, Display and Source

It happens quite often that when you set the resolution in Windows higher than what the monitor supports, then the monitor screen goes blank, but the computer continues to work. To fix this problem, you need to start Windows in Safe Mode and set your screen resolution to a lower resolution.

However, modern versions of Windows will automatically revert to the original screen resolution within 15 seconds unless you click the Save Changes button. Additionally, Windows usually detects the highest resolution your monitor can support and only shows those settings.

Another situation where there is no signal on the monitor but the computer is working is if you connected your laptop to a second monitor or projector and then simply turned it off without telling Windows. On laptops, you can fix this by pressing the Fn key and the monitor key, which is somewhere on the F1-F12 panel, depending on the laptop manufacturer.

Additionally, you must ensure that your monitor's input source is set to the correct input. Most monitors usually automatically detect the input source, but sometimes this feature may be disabled. Open the settings menu on your monitor and go to the “Input Signal” section. Here, select the input you use on your computer, such as VGA, HDMI, and others.

Method 4 - BIOS and Windows Recovery

If you see a boot screen when you turn on your computer, but as soon as Windows starts to boot, the image on your monitor goes blank, there is most likely a problem with Windows.

In this case, you need to go to safe mode and try to restore Windows using the built-in system restore function, or reset to factory settings.

Method 5 - Hardware Check

The last step is to look at the actual hardware. Before doing anything else, try disconnecting all devices from your computer, such as your keyboard, mouse, external hard drive, speakers, printers, scanners, and the rest.

Sometimes a problem with other hardware can cause the monitor to go blank but the computer to work. If this does not solve your problem, you need to check the port connectors on your computer and monitor for damage.

Many users remove the cable incorrectly, which can cause it to break over time. Sometimes people try to insert a cable into a connection that is not intended for it, causing damage to the ports.

In this case, you don't have many options - you need to take your computer to a service center to fix bent or damaged ports.

If you are a little tech savvy, you can try opening your computer and checking that the hardware, particularly the motherboard or hard drive, is connected correctly.

That's all! We hope you were able to solve the problem yourself when the monitor does not show an image, but the computer works. Otherwise, you will have to take the computer and monitor to a service center.

When working with a computer for a long time, you have to deal with issues related to its incorrect operation. A common problem that occurs among new and experienced users: the monitor does not turn on when the computer starts. The reasons for this, in 90% of cases, are not related to a broken monitor. But, let's look at everything in order.

Causes

When, when you start the computer, the screen does not turn on, the power button continues to light (the indicator continues to blink in standby mode, as if the computer is turned off), or No Signal appears on the screen, check the connections of all cables.

If this does not help, the following may be the cause of the display not working:

  1. The computer's power supply has failed.
  2. The contacts of the RAM sticks are clogged.
  3. Hardware failure of the discrete video card or its contacts are clogged.
  4. The computer motherboard has failed.
  5. Monitor failure.

Important! Troubleshooting in this matter seems to be a difficult task, since when you turn on the computer, it “comes to life” and works, or creates an imitation of work (coolers spin, indications turn on on the CD/DVD drive and on the system unit). Attention to detail will tell you the cause of the breakdown.

Troubleshooting

Before disassembling the system unit or monitor, perform diagnostics to find out where the fault is located:

  1. Turn on your computer. Can you hear the sound signal (short squeak) that sounded previously when the machine was working properly? If not, the problem is in the PC. If yes, let's keep an eye on the download.
  2. When starting the operating system (for example Windows), did the welcome music play? Is he playing now? If not, the problem is in the PC. If yes, we carry out further diagnostics.
  3. If there is no more equipment in the house (computer, laptop, netbook) to which you can connect and test the monitor, on the back of the computer there are 2 connectors for turning it on: to a discrete video card (connected now) and to an integrated one.
  4. Reconnect the monitor, reboot. Is your monitor working? Yes - there is a problem with the video card configuration or its contacts: try removing the board and cleaning the contacts with a regular eraser. It didn’t help, the video card needs to be repaired. No - let's move on.

  5. If possible and you are friends with your neighbors, connect your monitor to their computer (or their monitor to yours).
  6. If it turns out that the monitor is working, but does not work with your system unit (there is a short sound at the beginning of the boot, there is a melody for loading the OS) - remove the RAM strips, wipe the contacts with an eraser, and put them back.
  7. If the actions described in steps 1 or 2 are not performed, try cleaning all the contacts and checking whether the boards and cables are securely seated (for example, connecting the hard drive to the motherboard).

After diagnostics and troubleshooting (if there are no hardware failures), your monitor will work again as before. If the problem is in the PC and the above does not help, it is likely that the problem is in the hardware (the power supply / video card or motherboard is faulty). Contact a PC repair technician.

Hello. The following problem has arisen. I watched the movie online. Suddenly a sharp long signal appeared from the speaker. The PC froze with the last frame on the monitor frozen, the mouse and keyboard did not work. I turned it off only via power. After that I turned on the computer. The system unit started working, but the image did not appear on the monitor. I turned it off again via power. The system unit disassembled it. I removed dust everywhere except the video camera. I connected the system without a mouse and keyboard, turned it on and it worked. I connected the mouse and it worked. Launched the antivirus and began scanning. Connected the keyboard. Everything worked for some time, after which the system unit froze without a signal. Turned it off with a button. I took out the video card and removed the dust from it. I installed everything in place. Connected the mouse, keyboard and printer. I turn it on - the system unit works, but there is no image on the monitor, no system sounds. The button on the monitor flashes. I tried connecting the monitor through the connector on the motherboard - the same result. Please help me determine what the problem is.

Hello, this happens due to a problem with the motherboard. The problem may be dry or swollen capacitors if the computer is many years old. Sometimes removing the charge helps - you need to turn off the system unit and turn on/off the button on the power supply several times.

  • Sergey

The computer is 4 years old. I haven’t looked closely at the capacitors, I’ll be able to look tomorrow. There is no toggle switch on the power supply. Unfortunately, now I can’t indicate the exact configuration of the system, but I still wanted to ask if there are any objective signs of a motherboard malfunction other than swollen capacitors on it? Thank you in advance.

  • Svetlana

Please tell me, the computer was working, but it was very noisy. We cleaned the cooler, and the computer turns on, but there is no image on the monitor of what it could be.

  • Vania

Hello. So my screen does not work (Yesterday everything worked fine, after that there was nothing:((
The power button flashes, and even when I completely turned off the power block, the power light was just on and there was a sign on the screen with no way to the system. But when the power block is turned on without dust, the power flashes and the block is working, I log into Skype because I hear sounds. behind the screen there is a menu button on it, the screen seems to brighten in 2 tones and in the corner it says TEST HUD

Good afternoon, I have the same problem, the system unit works, the monitor is black, when I turn it on it says no signal, the condensers on the motherboard seem to be ok, the video card is also ok, in general everything works, but the screen is black, all the cords, etc. I checked, tell me what to do?

  • Alexander

good afternoon, I have a problem with the monitor, yesterday I brought the computer home from the street, put it in the room to warm up, it became condensed, stood until the morning, came to connect it to the network, it was dry, connected everything, turned it on, everything worked clearly, but the power was a little slow , I decided to look at what was wrong with the thermal paste on the cooler, when I removed the cooler, I also pulled out the processor (it’s a rectangular board and there are a lot of antennae on the bottom)
I realized that something was wrong, I put it back, I turn on the computer unit to boot, but the monitor is black and the power button is flashing, what’s the problem. May be?
The worker checked the monitor on another unit, the wiring is also normal.
(the video camera is built into the uterus) if it’s not difficult, sign up on VK, I’ll be very grateful.

Good afternoon....the same problem: the system unit turns on but the monitor does not respond....writes there is no signal (I checked the monitor and cords are working)....sometimes the monitor turns on at startup but does not go beyond the BIOS...the test passes then a black window with a dash....changed the power supply ...the battery...threw the video camera....it doesn’t help. Thank you in advance.

  • Tatiana

when you turn on the computer, the system unit turns on and the monitor has no image, although there are sounds, there is something to do once, but I moved the wires and it turned on, but now it doesn’t work, what should I do?

  • Mario

If there are a couple of swollen candidates, do they need to be replaced? I just had the same problem, the system manager is plowing the monitor does not turn on and tried another monitor to no avail, only the green indicator on the system unit is on, the red one does not light up and does not blink.

Good day, question: I turn on the system, the motherboard does not beep and the red loading indicator does not blink, the mouse monitor does not work. What could be a power supply or a power supply?

The most common malfunction is when the PC actually turns on, but does not display an image on the monitor. You see lights on the computer case and hear the fans running inside, but nothing happens on the screen.

There are several possible reasons why your monitor is not displaying information on the screen and it is important to be proactive in troubleshooting.

Approximate order:

1. Check your monitor. Before attempting more complex and time-consuming troubleshooting methods, make sure your monitor is working properly.

It is possible that your computer is working fine, and the problem is in the monitor.

2. Check that your PC is fully power cycled. In other words, make sure your computer completely completes rebooting and shutting down.

Often the computer appears to be "not working" when in fact it is simply having trouble resuming from standby or sleep mode.

Note: You can turn off your computer completely in power-saving mode by holding the power button for 3 to 5 seconds. Once the power is completely off, turn on the computer and make sure it will boot normally.

3. Diagnose the cause using the beep code. The beep code will make it possible to quite accurately find the reason for the computer turning off.

If you were unable to solve the problem with a specific beep code, proceed to the next steps.

4. Clearing the BIOS on the motherboard will return it to its default settings. Incorrect BIOS settings can lead to display problems on your monitor screen.

Important A: If clearing the CMOS fixes the problem, make BIOS changes one at a time, at least when the problem returns you'll know what changes caused it.

5. Make sure the power supply switch is positioned correctly. If the power input voltage is not correct (varies by country), your computer may not turn on at all.

Most likely, the wrong voltage will not allow the computer to turn on at all, but it may not turn on completely.

6. Reinstall everything inside your PC. Reinstalling will restore various connections inside your computer and will very often fix this problem.

Try reinstalling the following:

  • Reinstall all internal and power cables
  • Reinstall memory modules
  • Reinstall the cards you are using

7.Reinstall the processor if you suspect it was not installed properly.

8.Check for possible short circuits inside the computer. This is often the reason why the computer will not turn on at all, but it may also prevent the computer from booting completely or may not display data on the monitor.

9.Check the power supply. Just because your computer's fans and lights are working does not mean the power supply is functioning properly. The PSU tends to cause more problems than any other piece of hardware and is often the reason why your computer won't boot fully.

If your power supply fails the test, replace it.

Important: Don't miss this test. Power supplies may not function properly and require replacement.

The following steps are the same as steps 8 through 12 described in the article The computer turns on and then turns off.

Users often encounter various problems when turning on their computer. For example, in some cases, when you turn on the computer, the monitor may not turn on, making it impossible to use the computer. This situation may be accompanied by the message “No Signal” or the computer monitor may be completely black.

In this article we will look at a number of reasons that can lead to such a problem and tell you how they can be eliminated.

Reason No. 1. Problems with connecting the monitor.

If you are faced with the fact that your monitor does not turn on when you turn on the computer, then the first thing you need to check is the connection of the monitor to the computer. First, make sure that the cable used for connection is not damaged in any way. If the cable has been chewed by pets or has been broken, it needs to be replaced.

Also, you need to check the latches on the sides of the connector. They must be securely tightened, both on the monitor side and on the computer side. If the monitor is connected via cable, then try disconnecting and reinserting the cable into the connector. Perhaps he just walked away.

Lock on DVI cable

If everything is in order with the cable, then pay attention to the monitor itself. Make sure the monitor is turned on and connected to power. To do this, press the power button and check the cable from the monitor to the outlet.

Source button on the monitor

Also try pressing the "Source" or "Input" button on your monitor. This may help if the monitor is expecting a signal from another source and therefore does not turn on when you turn on the computer.

Reason #2: Faulty monitor.

If everything is in order with the monitor connection, but it still does not turn on when you turn on the computer, then it may be faulty. Now that almost everyone has TVs with an HDMI input, it is very easy to check the health of the monitor. To do this, just connect any TV to your computer instead of a monitor.

Video inputs VGA and HDMI on TV

If an image appears on the TV, then it is the monitor that is to blame, but if the TV also does not show anything, then you need to look for the problem in the computer itself.

If you have problems connecting your TV, then we have an article about that. You can follow the link and check it out.

Reason No. 3. Problems with the video card.

If you have checked everything related to the monitor and its connection, then the problem may be with the video card. For example, one of the video outputs on a video card may stop working. To check this, you need to try connecting the monitor to a different video output. To do this, you may need an adapter or cable that matches the video output.

Video outputs on the video card

If the monitor does not turn on regardless of which video output is used, then you need to check the serviceability of the entire video card as a whole. This can be done in two ways:

  • install another video card into your computer;
  • start the computer using built-in graphics (if built-in graphics are present);

If you have another video card at hand, then it is better to use this method. Install another video card and try turning on the computer. If you have difficulties with this, then read the article
