  • using the command line;
  • through safe mode;
  • using a recovery environment;
  • using an image/boot disk.

Restoring the operating system using system “resuscitation” checkpoints is one of the most affordable, effective and popular options. To apply it, you need to make a series of clicks:

  1. Panel "Start";
  2. "System Restore";
  3. "Further";
  4. "Select a restore point";
  5. "Ready".

With such an operation, problems with the computer will be corrected, changes will be canceled and the system will be returned to the operating state that allowed the PC to boot normally. There is no loss of data, files and documents with this type of recovery. All data is saved. The operation is reversible. You can roll back the system to a previous computer state and use a different restore point.

Many people wonder how to make a recovery point on their own (manually) in order to choose it in the future? To do this in the same menu "Start" - "System Restore" You can create such a point yourself at any time convenient and suitable for you. It will be saved indicating the current date, which you just have to remember.

From restore point

In computer engineering there is such a thing as a recovery point. These are saved PC settings. As a rule, saving occurs automatically with each successful OS boot. The easiest way to restore Windows 7 is to use this data.

Press F8 when your computer boots. This command will bring up a menu of system startup options. Next, you need to select the Last Known Good Configuration option.

Another method can be used. Go to the properties of the My Computer folder. Find the line System Protection, clicking on which will open the dialog box of the same name. Click Recovery – Next. We set a target date, indicate the disks that need to be fixed, and confirm the actions. After rebooting, the PC should work normally.

No restore points

You can fix problems with the OS even without restore points. To do this you will need to resort to the LiveCD program. You need to download it and burn it to a flash drive with the .iso extension.
Further all actions will take place in the BIOS. You need to configure booting from a flash drive. To do this, in the Boot section, select USB-HDD in the First boot device line.

Before proceeding directly with the recovery, copy all the necessary files to a removable disk. The LiveCD program provides a special menu for these purposes.

We will fix the system error using an archived copy. Connect the USB flash drive, open the Windows\System32\config\ folder. Files with the names default, sam, security, software, system must be moved to any other folder. In their place, transfer similar files from the RegBack folder and restart the computer.

Command line

You can resort to “reanimating” Windows 7 from the command line if the PC begins to freeze or works slowly, however, the system still boots. Enter the menu "Start" and using the right mouse button, launch the command prompt as administrator. Run the rstrui.exe command, which will open the system restore program. Click "Further". It is not always possible to play it safe and create OS restore points in advance. Problems may arise that block the option of such “reanimation” of the PC. Then you can use another, no less effective and easy option - restoring the Windows system using the system itself.

We rely on the diagram:

Restoring Windows 7 using Safe Mode

This method is preferred if the usual system boot is impossible. Then after pressing the PC power button on the system unit, hold down the F8 key to call "Start Menu". One of the "Menu" options is "Safe mode". Select it and press Enter on the keyboard. As soon as Windows boots, we carry out the algorithm of actions that we described earlier.

If you work with Windows 8, problems may occur, the Internet may not work correctly, etc. To fix this, you can use the classic recovery method through restore points.

Another option is a system rollback. To do this, open the menu "Start" - "Control Panel" - "Windows Update". Select an item "Removing updates". The same can be done using the command line.

So, in the list of updates that opens, we delete those from the moment of installation of which (we look by date) problems and malfunctions began. We delete unnecessary files and reboot.

You can perform a factory reset on Windows 8.1. Important files will not be affected during this operation. The method is effective, but to implement it, the OS needs to boot without problems. We use the algorithm:

  1. Right side of the monitor - "Options";
  2. "Change settings";
  3. "Update and Recovery" - "Recovery";
  4. "Recovery without deleting files".

If such operations do not help and the computer continues to work incorrectly, you can roll back to the basic settings. Some programs and utilities, personal PC settings will be reset, and personal data will be deleted.

This technique is used extremely rarely if the other options described above do not help. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

If you have some kind of problem with your computer, for example, it has become very glitchy, or even worse, it won’t start at all, then the first thing you need to do is to try a system rollback, thereby we will return the settings and system files from the backup that was created for example two days ago, when the computer was still working normally.

This is a good opportunity to quickly repair your computer and return it to normal operating condition. I will write three ways in which you can rollback in Windows 7.

System rollback from Windows 7

Restoring the system from safe mode

You can roll back settings and system files from safe mode, when, for example, Windows does not boot in normal mode. There were cases when this method helped me out a lot.

We wait until the computer boots into safe mode. Next, all the steps are almost the same as restoring from Windows, but I’ll write it again, just in case :).

Click start and enter “recovered...”, launch the utility "System Restore".

Since I just did a system rollback, I now have an option to cancel the restore. Choose “Select a different restore point” and click “Next” (you will probably just need to click next).

I left this method for dessert, because here you will need a boot disk with Windows 7. But this method also has its advantages. For example, you can rollback when even safe mode does not work, in short, in the most severe cases :).

If there is one created by a system tool, or using third-party programs, you need to restore from a Windows backup image created in advance. Many users, unfortunately, do not pay enough attention to system backup, so these methods will not work for them.

How to restore Windows 7 bootloader? To restore operating system boot files, use the built-in Windows tools: automatic startup recovery, as well as using the BootRec and BCDboot utilities included in the operating system, launched on the command line.

Before using operating system tools, you need to know the hard drive layout. Modern computers have a GPT hard drive layout style and a new BIOS - UEFI, but in the days of Windows 7, MBR partitioning was used on disks, and now an outdated BIOS. On some computers, Windows 7 64-bit is installed on UEFI and GPT drives, and in general, Windows 7 PCs use MBR (Master Boot Record) partitioning.

In this article, we will look at instructions on how to restore the bootloader in Windows 7 using system tools: first, we will perform an automatic recovery, and then we will try to restore the bootloader from the command line.

To perform operations to restore the boot loader, you will need either an installation DVD with the operating system, or a bootable USB flash drive of Windows 7. Restoring the Windows 7 bootloader using the Bootrec utility

The next method involves restoring the Windows 7 boot loader via the command line. For this we use the Bootrec.exe utility. This method only works with disks that have a Master Boot Record (MBR).

From the boot disk you need to enter the Windows Recovery Environment using the method described above.

In the System Recovery Options window, click on the Command Prompt option.

The Bootrec.exe utility uses the following basic commands:

  • FixMbr - The option writes the master boot record (MBR) to the system partition of the disk, compatible with Windows 7, does not overwrite the existing partition table
  • FixBoot - using the command, a new boot sector that is compatible with Windows 7 is written to the system partition
  • ScanOS - searches all drives of installed Windows 7 compatible systems, displaying entries that are not in the system configuration store
  • RebuildBcd - searches all drives of installed Windows 7 compatible systems, selecting systems to add data to the boot configuration store

The FixMbr command is used to fix the master boot record, as well as to remove incorrect code from the master boot record.

The FixBoot command is used under the following conditions: the boot sector is damaged, the boot sector has been replaced with a non-standard boot sector, or an earlier version of Windows (Windows XP or Windows Vista) was installed on the Windows 7 computer.

The ScanOS command searches all drives for operating systems compatible with Windows 7. As a result, all entries related to other operating systems installed on the computer that do not appear in the boot manager menu will be displayed.

The RebuildBcd command allows you to detect and add boot configurations installed on the system computer to the storage. This option is used to completely rebuild the system boot storage configuration.

In the command line interpreter window, enter the command (after entering commands in the command line, press the “Enter” key):

If the problem persists, you may need to enter the following command:

The remaining commands are used if multiple operating systems are installed on the computer.

Close the Command Prompt, and in the System Recovery Options window, click the Restart button.

How to restore the Windows 7 bootloader from the command line using the BCDboot utility

Using the bcdboot.exe utility, you can restore the Windows 7 bootloader on computers with MBR or GPT hard disk partition styles.

Boot from the removable device, go to the window with the choice of system recovery method, and then launch the command line. Another option: in the very first window, press the “Shift” + “F10” keys on your keyboard to enter the command line window.

In the Command Prompt window, enter the command to launch the DiskPart utility:

To display information about your computer's drives, enter the following command:

List volume

We need to find out the drive letter (volume name) on which the operating system is installed.

The volume name (drive letter) in Diskpart may be different from the drive letter in Explorer. For example, in my case, in Explorer the system partition has the letter “C”, and in diskpart it is designated by the letter “E”.

In this command: “X” is the drive letter on which the operating system is installed. In my case, it is the letter "E", you may have a different volume (disk) name.

Close the command prompt.
