The Avast folder is not deleted. How to remove Avast from your computer if it cannot be removed

Sometimes antivirus products behave as if they, and not the user, are the real owners of the computer - either they urgently need to download the next batch of updates, or they are distracted by warnings from an overly suspicious security module when launching a harmless program. But the worst of all are the problems that arise when trying to uninstall, when the application does not want to leave the “lived-in” computer. To deal with them, you need to know how to completely remove Avast from Windows 10, Windows 7, 8, 8.1, if it is not removed.

Standard way to remove Avast from Windows 7, 8, 10

The simplest option on how to properly remove Avast from a computer is to use the system snap-in for managing installed software, which can be found in the control panel. Each OS needs to access it in its own way.

Here's how to remove Avast Free Antivirus from a computer running Windows 7:

Life hack: In Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, a similar action is performed in one step - through Win-X.

Note: The installer asks for administrator permission, so if you are using an account with reduced rights under Windows 10, it may report that I can’t remove Avast. In this case, log in with an administrator account.

Using AVASTCLEAR

Another way to completely remove Avast from your computer is to use a utility that can be downloaded from the website of the Avast creators (it is distributed free of charge). Please note that the cleaning program is available in two versions:

  • for modern PCs – https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe ;
  • for older machines whose processor is not compatible with SSE2 – http://public.avast.com/supp/kb/avkb10/avastclear10r4.exe .

If you have Win 10, then you can safely take the first option, it will almost certainly work correctly. If your PC is old and the question arises why I can’t uninstall Avast, try the second one.

After launch, the utility will automatically suggest switching to safe mode, as it is more suitable for completely removing Avast (works with Windows 8 and others).

After agreeing, the utility will remind you to save the results of your work (if you kept other programs open at the same time) so as not to lose anything.

After this, the system will reboot and automatically enter safe mode. You don’t even need to press any keys on your PC or search for how to get into it from w10 to remove Avast.

As a result, another reboot will be required, as when using the standard uninstaller.

Unfortunately, this option is not ideal and also leaves marks.

Additional cleaning

The next stage of the struggle after any of the options described above is to manually remove the software directory from Program Files, which for some reason may remain.

Then you need to check the registry. Run regedit via Win-R (preferably as an administrator), then using Ctrl-F, find the remaining entries and delete them.

Attention! If errors occur, you can easily ruin the system. Therefore, first export a copy of the data or make a restore point.

Cleaning via Uninstall Tool

Using third-party software allows you not only to remove the antivirus itself, but also to delete the Avast folder, which sometimes does not get deleted, no matter how hard you try. A good option is Uninstall Toll and its forced removal mode.

The program will ask for confirmation before performing actions, since direct destruction of software components is used. It is recommended to resort to this option when the standard uninstaller is damaged or for other reasons does not work as it should.

After scanning the PC, the program will display both folders and registry entries (entire keys and sections) that need to be removed from the computer in order to remove Avast antivirus software. It will also show how much space is available. If desired, you can first save the list as XML for further verification.

Then confirm completion.

Alternative means to completely remove Avast

You can also use other third-party developments - IoBit Uninstaller or Revo Uninstaller. The latter is good because it has a portable version, although it is somewhat behind in version from the fully installed program. Let's look at his example of how to remove Avast Free antivirus from a computer if it is not completely removed using standard tools or a cleaning utility.

After starting the program, find the desired item in the list and click on the software removal icon in the menu.

The smart utility will first try to create a restore point, then it will try to run the uninstaller prescribed in the OS, and only after that it will offer to scan the disk for possible remains. Select the desired analysis depth and start the process.

After some time, a list of detected elements will be displayed. You can uncheck some items if you suspect that they will still be required. Then delete the highlighted items.

Process folders and files in the same way.

If Revo fails to clear some data, it will tell you that it will automatically clear it during the next reboot.

Although, there are cases when none of the listed methods gives
positive result and if this happened specifically with your PC, then do not
It's worth being upset! For these purposes there are many special
programs, of which the best is Revo Uninstaller.

In this article I want to touch on the problem of uninstalling Avast antivirus, because people often contact me about this issue. You won’t get much money for uninstalling Avast, you’ll only lose more time. The whole problem is that it is difficult to remove (or rather, removing Avsat is not difficult, but then you have to clean out the registry for a long time). Avast leaves a lot of garbage behind on the computer and in the registry. Entries in the registry are especially unpleasant. The problem is that if you once had Avast antivirus installed (especially for those who had a trial version of the program) and its license ran out, then you won’t be able to install it a second time, or rather, you’ll install it, but it won’t work anymore, because that upon re-installation, an entry about the end of the license is already written in the registry.

In general, I would not recommend using this antivirus. Believe me, it’s better not to spare money and install a normal antivirus program, for example Eset Nod 32 or the well-known Kaspersky. Moreover, the price of a license for a year, for example, Eset Smart Security, is only 1,690 rubles, and for 3 computers. That is, if you chip in with three friends, comrades or relatives, it will come out to a total of 563 rubles (I’ll look it up on the calculator right now), and that’s for a year (well, plus the interest for transferring money via the Internet will be about 600, and the extension for another year is somewhere around 400 rubles). You pay once and, as they say, sleep peacefully all year and don’t have to think about how to remove all sorts of Avasts. Based on my experience, I would advise everyone to install Eset Smart Security (and not just Eset Antivirus, but Eset Smart Security since this version is more suitable for active Internet users). Kaspersky, of course, is also good, but I do not advise installing it on old computers or with low productivity.

In this article we will look at 3 ways to remove Avasta antivirus.

METHOD 1. How to completely remove Avast (standard removal using built-in Windows tools followed by cleaning the registry)

So, we will use standard Windows tools. The method is very confusing for an inexperienced user, and it is worth using it if you have already uninstalled Avast and traces of it still remain.

Open the Start menu and go to the control panel

In the control panel, find and select “Uninstall programs”

In the program uninstall panel we find our Avast antivirus and to remove it, double-click on it with the left mouse button

The Avast installation window will open. Select the “Uninstall” tab and click the “Next” button. The removal process will begin. Follow the program's instructions. At the end you will need to restart your computer

In the “Run” command line, enter the command regedit R12; which translates as registry editor, and click the “Ok” button

This is actually the R12 registry; the heart of the computer (or rather the operating system). Place the cursor at the very top on the line “Computer”

The program will find the first value with Anti-Virus remnants. Delete it by clicking on the “Delete” button

And so on until you delete all values with the word Avast. The procedure can take a long time for an inexperienced user. At the end, when the registry is cleared, it won’t hurt to restart the computer.

Now Avast is completely removed.

METHOD 2. Removing Avast using the antivirus manufacturer's utility.

I will describe it briefly, since it is unlikely that you will need it as much as this utility. Avast also does not completely remove, and after that you will also have to clean the registry.

So go to the manufacturer’s official website at www.avast.ru

On the right side of the site, find the “Support” section.

At the bottom of the site in the “Orders and Offers” section we find a link to the program

In the lower left corner of the browser we find the downloaded file and launch it with one click

The automatic removal process will begin. The computer will reboot into safe mode and run the program. You will only need to confirm the Avast removal process. Then the computer will reboot itself and basically everything is ready.

METHOD 3. Complete removal of Avast using special uninstaller programs.

If you are still a novice user, then I advise you to read about this method to the end.

There are special uninstaller programs that, after removal, also clean up remaining traces of programs from the registry and from the hard drive, thereby preventing the computer from becoming contaminated with unnecessary files remaining after removal. They are suitable not only for removing Avast. but also for all programs. So I advise you to choose the most optimal one for yourself and use it constantly. For example, I use Revo Uninstaller, which I recommend to you. I won’t praise it, watch it for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

So let's run the installed Revo Uninstaller

And we find the Avast program in the list! Select it and click on the “Delete” button at the top.

First, the standard Avast antivirus removal process will follow.

We follow the instructions of the program, but at the end we mark the “Reboot later” item with a dot (that is, there is no need to restart the computer). Click the “Finish” button

Now in Revo Uninstaller you need to scan for the remaining junk files. Mark the “Advanced” item with a dot and click the “Scan” button

The process of searching for unnecessary files and values may take some time, so in the meantime you can go make yourself some tea or make some coffee. After scanning, the program will display the registry values remaining from Avast. Check all the boxes and click the “Delete” button. After completing the process, click the “Next” button

Reboot the computer. Hooray! All is ready.

Uninstalling Avast antivirus using the Avast Clear utility

If one of the Avast antivirus programs was installed on your computer and you cannot completely remove it in the standard way, through “Control Panel” - “Uninstall Programs”, then for such cases the antivirus developers have released a special uninstaller utility. This utility removes all remnants of the antivirus program, including files, drivers and registry entries. The utility allows you to uninstall Avast even if it is not in the list of installed programs or an error appears during normal uninstallation.

Download the utility and run it (avastclear.exe file). It is recommended to run the utility in Windows "safe mode", since in normal mode complete removal is not always possible and leads to errors. For example, the error “The avast! self protection module is enabled. For this reason, the operation cannot be completed” may appear, which indicates that uninstalling avast antivirus is only possible in safe mode.

To boot into Safe Mode, press and hold the F8 key while the computer boots, select "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode" from the menu, and press the "Enter" key.

After launch, the utility will check what Windows mode it is running in, and if it is not “Safe Mode”, then the utility will offer to restart the computer and automatically enter “Safe Mode”. We recommend clicking “Yes” and confirming to restart Windows; or select "No" to run the utility normally.

During the reboot, a menu may appear in which you need to select the "Avast Clear Uninstall" item (this item is selected by default):

After launching the utility, it scans your system for Avast antivirus components. You can change the folder with the detected product and its edition, but if you are not sure, then do not change anything and click the "Delete" button:

If the removal was successful, you will see the information “The product was successfully removed...” and you will be prompted to restart your computer. Click "Restart your computer" and after rebooting, Avast will be completely removed from the system.
