Chapter 1
Beginning of work
The Kindle Touch manual will introduce you to all the features and characteristics of this e-reader.
If you purchased your Kindle Touch through a registered Amazon.com account, the e-reader will already be “linked” to it. To check this, click the Home button, and look at what Amazon username is displayed in the upper left corner of the Home screen. If it says My Kindle or shows the name of the previous Kindle Touch owner instead of your Amazon account name, then you need to register the book. Using Controls
In order to learn how to read and download audiobooks, newspapers, magazines and books, you need to remember just a few simple steps. Most of your interactions with Kindle Touch will be done through the device's touchscreen.
Below the screen is the Home button. On the bottom there is a headphone input, a charging indicator, a power button and a micro-usb port, which is also used for charging. There are two built-in speakers on the back side.
Home Button: This button takes you back to the Home Page, where you can view a list of downloaded e-books and other files.
Headphone jack: Connect headphones to listen to audiobooks, background music, or text-to-speech text.
Charging indicator light: The indicator glows amber while charging, and green when the battery is fully charged.
Power button: To turn on your Kindle Touch, press the Power button. To put your e-reader into sleep mode, press and release the Power button; A screensaver should appear on the screen. To completely turn off the Kindle Touch, hold down the Power button for 7 seconds until the book screen goes blank. If the Kindle Touch freezes or does not turn on, you can restart the reader by pressing and holding the Power button for 20 seconds.
Speakers: On the back of your Kindle Touch are two speakers for playing your audio content. Connecting headphones automatically turns off the built-in speakers.
Charging port/Micro-USB port: You can use the included USB cable to connect your book to your PC to download content or charge your Kindle Touch. To recharge from the mains, you will need a special charger, which is sold separately.
When the Kindle Touch is charging, a lightning bolt icon appears at the top of the Home screen.
When using an AC charger, your Kindle Touch batteries will be fully charged in less than 4 hours. If you use third-party AC adapters or a USB cable for charging, the charging time for the e-reader batteries can be longer than 4 hours.
If the charging indicator at the bottom of your Kindle Touch does not turn amber, check that the USB cable is fully inserted into the USB port on your computer.
If after doing this, your e-reader still does not charge, try a different USB port or outlet. Please note that some older computers have low-power USB ports that are not suitable for charging.
Using the screen
The Kindle Touch has a touch screen, which is used to perform most operations on the device.
To select a file, simply click on its icon on the screen. For example, if you want to start reading a book, click on its title located on the Home page.
Kindle Touch's EasyReach technology allows you to effortlessly navigate the pages of your favorite books, magazines, and other periodicals. In this case, you can hold the book in one hand. Tapping almost any area of the screen will scroll the page forward, with enough space to make scrolling comfortable for both left and right hands. Clicking on the left side of the display will take you back a page.
You can also turn the pages of the e-book by swiping your finger across the screen. To go forward a page, swipe your finger across the display from right to left; to go back a page, swipe from left to right. To move to the next chapter of a book (or to the next article for a periodical), swipe from the top of the screen; To go back a chapter, swipe from the bottom of the screen. Please note that not all books allow you to swipe to turn pages.
Clicking at the top of the display brings up the Toolbar, which includes the following options:
Back button: Use this button to go back a step.
Kindle Store: Pressing the button will take you to the Kindle Store using a wireless Wi-Fi connection.
Search field: Clicking on this area of the screen automatically shows the virtual keyboard. You can choose different search targets: This Book (search the current book), My Items (search all Kindle Touch catalogs including book titles and authors), Kindle Store (search the online Kindle store), Wikipedia and Dictionary ( lookup in the dictionary). Once you have selected the target of your search, click on the Go button or Return button on the virtual keyboard to display the search results.
Menu Button: This button displays a menu of options. The list of options may vary depending on where the Kindle Touch screen is located. For example, when you are reading a book, the menu displays the options necessary for reading: enabling the text-to-speach function, viewing notes, book descriptions, leaving bookmarks.
A second toolbar appears at the bottom of the display while reading a book:
Button Aa: Clicking this button will open a window with settings for the book text, including its size, type, line spacing and number of words per line.
Go To Button: The options shown after you press this button vary depending on what the Kindle Touch display is currently showing. However, in most cases they include Beginning, Table of Contents, Location, and Page.
X-Ray Button: The Kindle Touch's X-Ray feature allows you to explore the structure of a book. For example, one click will allow you to see exactly where specific words, symbols or themes appear in the book. In addition, you can see a more detailed description of a particular word using Wikipedia or Shelfari (X-Ray is not supported by all Kindle books).
Sync: If X-Ray is not available for a book, the Sync button will indicate this. To sync your current book with your other devices or the Kindle app, click the Sync button.
Periodicals Toolbar
When you read a periodical, the Toolbar adjusts for these purposes.
Home button for periodicals: Click to return to the list of sections.
Sections and Articles button: Click to go to a hierarchical display of a list of sections and articles of a newspaper or magazine.
Status indicators
At the top of the screen on the Home page, indicators are displayed that show the status of available services for your Kindle Touch. To see these indicators while reading documents, simply click at the top of the display - this will bring up the Toolbar.
Wireless LED Statuses
Whispernet delivers content to your Kindle wirelessly. Your Kindle can connect to Whispernet via a Wi-Fi connection or, on some models, a 3G connection (read more about this in the article). The more full the Wi-Fi and 3G connection indicators are, the stronger and more stable the wireless connection.

This indicator appears in the top left corner of the Kindle Touch screen when the device is busy downloading new content, checking for updates, searching, opening large PDF files, or loading web pages.
Kindle Touch Settings
Kindle Touch settings concern connecting the device to Wi-Fi and 3G networks, as well as registering (“linking”) it to an Amazon account.
Network connections: Books, magazines, and other content are delivered to your Kindle Touch using built-in wireless connectivity. If your Kindle Touch supports both Wi-Fi and 3G connections, try to use a faster Wi-Fi connection to download content. You can connect to Wi-Fi networks at home or through hotspots around the world. To see available Wi-Fi connections, go to the “Home Page” and click on the “Menu” button, and then select “Settings”. In the settings window, click on Wi-Fi Networks and then select the connection you need. If you see a lock icon next to the network icon, you will need a password to access the connection.
Kindle models with 3G support use the same data transfer technology as cell phones, so the quality of the 3G signal will directly depend on the cellular coverage area. By default, Kindle 3G is automatically connected to a 3G network. If the 3G signal is insufficient, Kindle can switch to slower GPRS and EDGE connections. Your Kindle automatically turns off its 3G connection if you are currently using a Wi-Fi connection. If you disconnect from a Wi-Fi network, or if coverage becomes weak, the Kindle will automatically switch back to a 3G connection.
To preserve battery life for as long as possible, try to only use your wireless network when you need to connect to Whispernet. If you turn off the wireless connection, both Wi-Fi and 3G connections stop working.
To register your Kindle Touch, click on the Menu button located on the Home page, then select Settings from the list of menus shown. Click Registration and select the appropriate option to begin the registration process.

As you know, Kindle supports MOBI, TXT and PDF formats. Find an article online that you would like to read on your Kindle. For example, let's take an article on Lenta.ru. Download various applications. The reader does not have to be only for reading; you can download many different applications there! Open the menu on the main page and select Apps.

- Sideloading (installing applications from unknown sources) is a great way to install applications on your e-reader that are not available through Amazon. In this case, you need to go to settings, then More, then Device, and then find the phrase “Allow Installation of Applications” or “Apps from Unknown Sources” and activate this option. You will then be able to download apps from third-party Android app sources. To do this, you need to go online from the reader, go to the site from which you are supposed to download the application, find the application and click on the “Download” button or similar. Convert PDF files. Unfortunately, the Kindle opens the .pdf as if the page size of the text strictly matches the screen size. In other words, the text can be compressed simply to the point of indecency and unreadability. To avoid this, you need to send a .pdf file to your e-reader with the word “convert” in the subject line. Then Kindle will convert the .pdf to its format.

Problem solving. Alas, even e-readers from Amazon can suddenly start working incorrectly. The reasons for this are numerous, and most of them can only be corrected by a specialist. However, before you panic and look for the address of the nearest service center, it’s worth checking a few things yourself - but, of course, not when the reader is constantly overheating; such problems require replacement of components.
- If your screen freezes or freezes seriously, then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. Then release the button, but wait another 20 seconds to press it again. The start screen should appear. There can be many reasons for the appearance of a “frozen” screen - from outdated firmware and clogged memory to overheating and low battery.
- Email not working? Yes, sometimes. Sometimes it doesn't turn on at all, sometimes it works, but only for a short time. Either way, it's annoying. The best way to deal with this is to download a third party K-9 or Kaiten mail app, or buy the Enhanced Mail app.
- Problems with getting online can be frustrating, because if there is no connection, then there is no way to buy books! In this case, you need to check the connection (upper right corner of the screen). If the signal is weak, but still there, then restart the reader. Also check the battery level - sometimes this affects the quality of the connection.
